Sonor D454 5x14 Ferromanganese Snare Drum vintage Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

Sonor D454 spun seamless ferro manganese steel snare drum. From my research this is a fairly rare drum and the imperial style lugs point to this being from either the late 60s or early 70s (if any Sonor buffs have additional info I'd love to hear it).

What an incredible sounding drum. It has a pretty wide tuning range. I added an audio track showcasing the sound of this drum. It's being played wide open. I typically use the drum with the internal dampener barely touching the batter head.

Throw off and internal dampener work smoothly. Appears to be all original (except heads).

Interesting sound to this. Like an undercurrent constant time/ring thing going on. Excellent playing by the way.

Nice observation. These seamless shells have a beautiful, musical ring to them. I've found it really helps it cut through when needed.

And it can certainly be deadened to ring less with the internal dampener or whatever the dampening of choice may be.

That's a gorgeous looking snare. If it's that old, I'm a tad surprised it doesn't say " Made In West Germany " I've had older Paiste cymbals with that written on.

Is this from the Swinger series of drums? I cannot find the lugs mentioned anywhere with the exception of the Sonor Museum which simply shows a picture of this type of lug and then mentions it was used with the Swinger line. None of the catalogs show this snare. How odd? Cool snare and in great shape. I am trying to find one that would go with my 74-75 Champion kit in Rosewood finish.

I just found it online. This snare came with beginner kits in the late 70's called Ranger or Medley. See link to view the page it is discussed. Still an awesome looking snare.

Nice find. I had someone tell me 71 but wasn't sure of much more than that. All I know is it's a seamless ferromanganese shell with some pretty cool lugs that look quite a bit like ludwig imperials. Most importantly the drum sounds really nice. I've chosen this over my 60s supraphonic on many occasion.
