I believe the strainer has been changed out to a later model.
I never saw a stick throw on a D-420.
It appears the edges may have been re-cut. I can`t see inside the drum. The size of the washers under the rods looks to be 1/2" wich is a quarter off each edge on the re-cut.
Just my thoughts on what I can see !!

If you take off material on the shell, with tight tolerences, you would have to raise the flat on the rods.....washers !!

Appreciate the feedback! The edges dont appear to be re-cut, but it does need new heads! Looks like the previous owner has used these to the full potential.
The strainer is not factory for sure, can see two small extra holes on the inside of the shell.
Was impressed by the responsivness of this snare....with a little help from new heads, and tweaking here and there, this is going to be killer!
I recently purchased a 60's Sonor pancake snare and have the similar problem. I want to tighten the heads more, however the tension rods hit the rims...What brand and type heads can be used to resolve the issue?
Thank You,

I've owned a few of them. They are great sounding drums once you find a good combination of heads to use. The most important thing about the heads is that they have the shallowest collar depth that you can find. The reason for this is that the tension rods from the top head "bottom out" against the bottom hoop, and the tension rods from the bottom head "top out" against the top hoop before the drum is properly tensioned. If you can tension the heads up to your desired pitch without the t-rods pushing against the opposing hoops, you should be pleased with a lively sounding little drum.
I wish I'd would have know better before I sold mine...I was never able to make it sound right!
Cause you got the bug dont'cha?

To my knowledge, Ludwig makes the shallowest resos. If they don't solve the problem, nothing will.
