Sonor Phonic Strainer? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi, I just bought a Sonor snare drum which appears to be some kind of 14 x 5 marching drum. I don't know if it was modified to be used in a parade or if it came like that from the factory. It looks like a Ferro Manganese Phonic snare drum. The lugs are phonic era. I can just about make out the strainer in one of the photos (pic 1) It looks like a type of beer tap style strainer which I have only seen on earlier teardrop snares. Could anybody tell me what model this snare is?

Attached is a photo of the drum in question and also attached is an image that I have found online of a Sonor drum that features this same strainer. Notice it is seen on a teardrop snare. I've not seen this strainer on a phonic snare. Any information about what model drum this is would be greatly appreciated.

That looks like a swinger snare based on the lugs. Are they plastic?

Absolutly Sonor "Swinger" Snare drum. Those lugs are plastic. The Strainer is original Sonor and can be found on those Swinger Snares a lot. Sorry it is not a Phonic Snare. Be careful with Tuning, those lugs tend to break! You could replace the lugs with aftermarket tube lugs and have a nice workhorse :D

Really? Plastic? That'll teach me for bidding on drums that I am not too knowledgeable about. I recently sold a D500 Ferro Manganese 10 lugger and I missed the sound of that snare and wanted something similar. I just assumed by the photos that this was an 8 lug phonic snare. I'll be happy if none of the lugs are busted. I'll let you know when it arrives. Thanks guys.

I`ve never seen a Swinger with that throw. They come with the D454 and the only difference is the throw type. I think this is a D440 from an Action kit, the Rockers have ten lugs (mostly) The later model Swinger had the Phonic snare before Phonics were introduced, they were high end Swingers all metal.

Keep in mind that you could order any snare with any kit.

Yes it`s Ferro. and seamless.

They break easily after thirty years for sure,....but the good news is SONOR changed up some of them to all metal and not just the inserts.

I think the ones without the logo on them are metal, they have groves.

I`ll check on that cuz I`m not sure exactly right now.

Great! I'll have the drum in a couple of days so I can give a more detailed description of ot then. I'll give a snare review. �� I've also bought an Amati COB which I got for an absolute song -Around 50 bucks all in. Not bad for a vintage 5 x 14 COB 10 lugger snare drum I would say. Brass is brass after all. Looking forward to getting this Sonor snare.
