Sound King Inside Lug Plates, When Did They Stop Using Them? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I know, I'm full of Slingy Sound King questions today....just one of those moods I guess!

So, I've noticed various Slingerland metal snares where some used the lug plates on the inside and some didn't. My aluminum snare (around 1971) used them and I think they are also in my Festival (1972 1/2), but not sure if they used them in Sound Kings and for how long....anyone know?

This may be a dumb question, but if you have extra plates, is it wrong to add them to a Sound King that didn't have them...like for strength, or is original, original and should be left unchanged. Yes, I'm a purist and believe everything should be as it was built, but seems these plates did have a purpose.

Help...please enlighten a clueless person...uhhhh novice collector! :(

I had a couple of Slingerland snares that had those plates you're talking about.I always thought they used them insted of cup washers.

SOMEBODY CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG.

Here are the three metal shelled Slingerland drums I have aside from my 30s Professional.

Serial 170... 1974 Slingerland 10 lug Student Aluminum Shell, model 140, 5x14 w/ribs... no backing plates

Serial 248... 1976 Slingerland 8 lug Sound King, model 130, 5x14 .... no backing plates

Serial 37695 1971 Slingerland 10 lug Sound King, model 133, 6.5x14 .... no backing plates

Interestingly, I did sell a mid-seventies 8 lug Sound King last summer that did have the backing plates.

Just bouncing off the purist comment, I wouldn't add or subtract something from my drums unless something had been added or subtracted previously.

My '65 Sound King has the lug plates.

Okay, thought I'd ask...thanks for your feedback. I can always sell the backing plates.
