You can adjust the travel time of the beater with the screws on the bottom of the poles. Max travel time, the pedal will come up and stop, by turnning the screws, whichever way it is, you can move the beater closer to the head and the pedal will come up but not stop, it will bounce up and down till it stops. (float) .... I keep mine this way !i
You wil know you have attached the pedal correctly if you can pick up the bass drum, shake the drum around, and the pedal stays on tight and dont move or rattle !i

Oh, Be sure to add shims so you don`t crush your bead on metal hoops or pait on wood hoops !i My BD came with incerts that slide around inside the hoop beads for this very reason !i
