The Straight 8s just released their 3rd full-length album "Girl Trouble". This was my first soup-to-nuts recording project and overall pretty happy with the results. The Straight 8s fall squarely in the rockabilly category, but venture into swing, surf, country, and straight-up rock.
For the sessions, I played the 1941 Radio King kit I bought from Mark Cooper about six years ago. It was only after signing up with VDF in the last year or so that I realized he posts here, so "thanks again Mark for such an awesome set of drums!"
I learned a lot during the recording process... especially how the same set of drums (and cymbals) can sound very different depending on mic placement, eq'ing, and other factors. As much as I would have loved for these drums to sound like Gene Krupa's, they don't. But I'm okay with that. LOL
Sure, it really comes down to the player (and I am NO Gene Krupa), but I think the difference between modern and old school recording techniques also contributes to similar era drums sounding very different. The other significant difference is that I was not playing calfskin heads... something that I would definitely experiment with for future sessions.
If you'd like to give a listen, you can go to the Straight 8s bandcamp page and stream the songs for free and purchase individual songs or the full album: http://thestraight8s.bandcamp.com/music The album is also available as MP3 downloads or can be delivered to your door via Amazon, iTunes, or CD Baby.
Hope y'all enjoy the tunes!
