Sunset Satin Flame Shellpack Last viewed: 14 hours ago

Often I thought it would be nice to find some drums the very same as the first Gretsch kit I bought new in 69. I sold that kit in 76 without regret.....at that time.

Recently I found some Sunset Satin Flame drums pretty much identical to the ones I sold. With a little bit of luck and persuasion I ended up with the drums. I drove across the boarder into Washington State and brought them home today. Talk about a flood of memories and nostalgia. They have some rash on the finish but they are beauties in my eyes. It's only a shellpack and there's no snare. I have a metal shelled snare drum that will fit nicely .....but it is a SSB drum. My 67 Acrolite is a good fit as well......probably even better than the Gretsch snare (I didn't say that out loud haha).

A sweet set! Is that the actual name of the finish? Sunset satin flame? If so that's a super poetic name! Congrats ons your score!

Yes - that is the name that Gretsch came up with when they introduced the finish in 1968. The finish was not listed officially and only mentioned in the 68 catalog. There was never a colour swatch printed in the catalogs. The finish was offered 68 to 70 as Sunset Satin Flame. Decades later Gretsch reintroduced the finish with a name change of Pink Satin Flame. Some call it Salmon Satin Flame.

Fantastic. Nicely done. I love satin flame finishes, especially the older ones.

Very nice. I have a soft spot for my "Blue Spruce" early 70's SSB concert tom set, too. And I agree with the snare drum comment. Mine had no snare tension adjuster, just a throw and a butt end. Strange factory anomaly?

Very cool looking kit. I know you gave up a lot to get them, but that makes them that much more special.

They look like they sound great! Keep on Pl
