Supra Differences? Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Hi, guys,

I play with a late seventies 5 1/2 inch Supra as my main snare. The best drum I have ever owned. I also collect vintage Stars and have SEVERAL snares including a 6 1/2 incher. Compared to the Stars that are an inch shorter in depth, the 6 1/2 incher has a much deeper sound. A bit more booming. I really don't think it has the same fast response either. Please forgive my ignorance concerning Ludwigs but, would a deep Bonham snare be similar in nature? Deeper? "Boomier"? Would the response be a bit less? Thank you.

I believe what you have is the classic LM 400 Supraphonic.

And they are 5x14.

The 6.5x14 is an LM 402.

IMHO the 402 does not necesarrily sound lower in pitch pitch/deeper.

That would be a head tuning thing on both models.

It just has a more robust shell sound.

Like a deeper aluminum tank.

Which is kind of what it is.

Kind of like the little "reverb" you hear after striking the drum,

......is bigger.

IMHO, to get a much lower pitch on a snare and still have it sound like a good snare,.....

go to a 15 or 16" diameter.

2 cents.

My experience is that the only real difference is a cob , verses the ludaloy shells and the different hoops , cob hoops also makes a change in the sound ....

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Speaking of cob hoops - I guess I was under the impression that most if not all Ludwig sixties snares, at least the Supra's, were cob - no? How about the hoops on a 60's Acrolite? And, what else would it be if not cob, and how can you tell? Thanks.

Ludwig transitioned from COB hoops to COS hoops in late '64. I own a '64 Supra and '64 Acrolite, both 100% original. The Supra has COB hoops, the Acrolite has COB bottom and a COS top hoop. It seems Ludwig used up the remaining 8 lug COB batter hoops faster than the snare sides, as they could be used both as top and bottom on floor toms.

As far as how to tell......a magnet will not stick to a COB hoop.

Wow, I never knew! Thanks for sharing - I've got to go take a magnet to my 67 supra's and acro! Safe to assume that also applies to the hoops on my 8", 9" and 14" toms on my 67 downbeat?

It would be odd to have COB hoops on those, but stranger things happened at Ludwig in the 60's

Right you are! I haven't uncovered the 67 snares to test yet, but the 67 downbeat toms - all cos, as is the classic maple bop snare I added to the kit of recent vintage. Is anyone using the cob hoops on anything new or is that a product of a bygone era? Thanks again.
