Supraphonic Question Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi guys, I'm new around here and was hoping to get a little more info on this Ludwig Supraphonic snare that I have here. I bought it a few years back from a local drummer and was wondering if everything on the drum is period. The serial is 116131 making it a 1964 drum according to some online sources. It has the red felt muffler with the baseball bat tone control and p-83 snare throw-off. It's the hoops that I'm not too sure about. They're chrome over steel and to me they don't seem 50 years old. The snare gates are the type you'd see on a later Supra or Acrolite. I find if I tune the reso head up high there is very little room for the string to pass through the snare gates.

I'm wondering if the early Ludalloy 64 shell with the red felt muffler would have come with COB hoops or not? The snare gates on the COB hoops seem to have a larger opening to allow the strings to pass through even if the reso head is cranked way up.

Here's some pics of the drum. What's your opinion? 64 supra, first year of the Ludalloy shell and serial numbers, COB hoops on this drum?

Thanks in advance.

that serial number is actually a spring 65 drum. cob or cos hoops or a combination of each would be correct for the drum. the red bat muffler coincides with that serial number. that's about as late as you see them before they went to the white felt on the muffler. can't see enough of the hoops to comment on that. wondering what the big shiney area is around the badge grommet though..either way, very nice drum. hope this helps..

Thanks again Mike, sorry that the pics don't show enough of the hoops to give you a better idea, but they're the chrome over steel with the smaller snare gates. I don't love them. ha ha. I would rather the COB hoops, but they don't seem to come up on eBay too often. As for the shiny patch? Probably just the flash from the camera.

the last of the cob hoops that show up from around 64-66 or so actually don't have the drop down hoop on the snare side. i'm sure some do, but most from that transitional period don't. yeah, the brass hoops can set ya back in the wallet a little bit!

You're not wrong about the price of COB hoops. They can cost a shiny penny or two, that's for sure. I hate to put a modern hoop on an old drum so I'd like to get the original COB Ludwig 10 lug hoops eventually. You don't have any by chance do you? :D

I hear ya, Rims n Skins. I had a buyer for this snare. It was listed in a local ads site, but I had a change of heart and messaged the buyer to cancel. He was very understanding. I think I'll hang onto it. It's a great sounding snare. I hope you managed to find another equally nice snare. And think on the bright side. You got $300 plus 2 years out of that drum all for a big useless ride cymbal, not a bad return I would say. :)

The badge is just filthy, somebody tried polishing it up with brasso and it seemed to have left a clean ring around the grommet and the rest is still a bit tarnished. That's all that is. And I know they used brasso or some kind of metal polish because there were signs of it inside the hole that I cleaned out using cotton buds.
