Tension Rods HELP! Last viewed: 1 day ago

Loading...

Hi,

I have a 1960's MIJ CREST drum kit. I just can't seem to find the correct tension-rods that fit regarding the diameter, not length for the toms. I seek 12 for the tom-toms and 8 for the floor tom that are actually a bit longer. Does anyone know if a vintage Pearl or Rogers kit tension-rods will work for this? Any suggestions? I see vintage rods on ebay and they look the same but can't really tell. I bought a set of SP rods to test, but they were just an ass hair too thick in the middle and wouldn't make it down the full lug shaft. Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS: I do not own a micrometer.

Peace

Welcome!

Take a lug and a rod to a hardware store and have the counter guy help you figure out what size and thread count you are working with... then order some.

:2Cents: Best of luck... sounds frustrating but the hunt is half the fun. :)

Not a Guru... just interested..

There's a good chance that your kit uses METRIC tension rods. Those rod are thinner with a finer thread count. Metric rods can be difficult to come across.

Standard tension rods used for the majority of drums are 12-24 thread, which is what you'll find in all modern rods you'll order today. An exception is DW and PDP, which are metric.

Where you goin'? Aren't you forgetting something?

Or do you need the tutorial on attaching a size appropriate file?

Please don't be a tease!

We want to see your Crest!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Most likely you need metric tension rods with 5mm x .80 threads. These were commonly used on many of the Made in Japan stencil kits. Modern rods of that size are the "fine tune" tension rods used on PDP and DW kits. If they don't fit then you probably want 5mm x .90 pitch rods which are hard to find. Worse comes to worse, you simply disassemble your entire kit, replace all of the internal threaded nut receivers with modern standard sized 12-24" parts so you can use regular standard tension rods. You should be able to buy a pocket sized thread pitch gauge which will fit on a keychain for just a few dollars at any ACE Hardware Store or one of their competitors.
