Gene Chrisman has been credited with laying down the drum track for Dusty Springfield's hit, Son of a Preacher Man. Anyone know what snare drum was in use to get that marvelous rim shot on every other backbeat?
My guess: Wooden shell PowerTone.

Ooo baby FFR428, I was close even if a mile away in some respects. I'm surprised that it turns out to be a brass snare.
Good news is that I have one of those. Will be looking to hold onto it now. Then all I have to do is figure out how he got that sound out of that drum. Could be the credit will go some distance toward the sound engineer too. Regardless, that team really hit a sweet spot by whatever means, equipment and skills.
Thanks much for the data and rapid-fire reply!
My test result: D-

Maybe that sound came from the drummer and not the drum!
Mind Blowi
Let's hope so. He really had it, didn't he?
Your welcome Dan. Son of a Preacher Man is a long time fav of mine. We even played it in Jazz Ensemble back in high school. A great classic. Love that snare sound too. I was surprised it was a COB Dyna! Tina Turner does a cool version too.

Sounds like he slacked the tuning/tension on the batter head. Orangemi may be right, those cats would do stuff like that, throw a wallet on the snare, but slack tuning on top will give the drum that sound too. If you ever have any hassles with an engineer over the snare sound during recording try the slack tuning. Engineers love it. What you'll hear in the cans is; "That's it! What did you do?" :p

... and no one mentioned Joss Stone??!! Shame!

Tommyp
It's the phrasing Tommy. Just like with Frank, Dusty had the phrasing on that tune. It's either that or I've gotten too old to appreciate a more modern rendition.
I would expect to have a wallet on a PowerTone, not a Dynasonic. I don't think of the Dynasonic as a drum with a lot of ring. You don't hear ring from Colomby's Dyna. You hear crispness. If the answer came back that it was a wooden shell Dyna, I would have been less surprised. I hear wood not brass. That's why I get a D-.
