The Drum Fanciers Life Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I'm in the middle of this search for the perfect live kit. My wife (historically very cool about the disease) suddenly announces "You have FIVE drum kits! I think you need to sell some of those drums" Actually there are 7 bass drums but I don't correct her. So I start thinking about selling some kits and I realize I don't really want to. Then I look at snare drums and I realize I may in fact lose money on quite a few of those. I mean I paid $350 for my COB Dyna and I don't want to give it away - that's just stupid. Unfortunately all the drum kits I now want to play live cost between 5 and 6K. To raise that type of money is going to need some serious saving or selling. But I love all my vintage drums and cymbals like puppies. And who wants to give away a puppy? :-(

No, just kidding. Keep the drums and buy more!

Thank you!

I asked my wife about your post. She said to tell your wife to wear blinders because she'll never win at getting you to sell. :)

New graphics on a bass drum reso head are one of the best kept secrets for a satisfying drumgasm that does not involve a new set of drums. Embrace GAS.

Look at it from a different perspective. You lust for a $5,000--$6,000 new drum set. Prioritize your current drum gear as "must haves" and "like to haves". Bundle enough "like to haves" together in a TRADE for that "wanna have" expensive drum set. Your drum lust will be satisfied, and your wife will THINK that she prevailed. Unless you absolutely hate a cymbal, I don't advise unloading any of them unless you have doubles of the same cymbal.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Do you ask your wife to sell off any of her shoes because she has too many?

What drums are you looking at that are gonna run you 6K?

6K? What a Sonor kit or something? Do what you like, but Mate unless your current crop of kits are dog, or your planning on some heavy touring, or of course play screaming metal don't do it. Although in the shop they'll sound great Your likely going to end up with a heavy pile of over engineered over priced soulless rubbish that goes BOING. Actually the closest to a warm sound I've experienced is C&C and they're still a bit modern boing too. If you try to sell on you'll loose big time. Stay with the old stuff.

I'm coming to Sydney soon however, so if you are selling I might nick a snare off you depending on what you got. PM me anytime.

Yep I'm curious what $5-6k kits your looking at too. C&C and SJC make some VERY cool kits. Unlimited finishes too. My wife is pretty good about the drum thing with me. I try to keep things tidy but it's starting to get out of hand. Ha!!! She has no idea!!!

Well, I'm in Australia. Practically every very good drum kit costs between 5 & 6 grand. I am looking at a Yamaha Maple Hybrid (custom sizes) or a Sakae Almighty birch/maple mix (custom sizes) and that will be very expensive too. I have looked at every other new kit and they are all too heavy, generic sounding or don't have bass drum mounted toms.

Incidentally, I think hybrid drum shells are very cool. They have the technology to tune a shell using different woods and I think this will become very common.

Thanks for the posts - some solid advice there too. I wish you could take drum kits home and try them out for a week - that could really help my marriage!
