The history of drums Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I wanted to share some of these Youtube links with you guys (and gals). This drummer is Daniel Glass, the drummer for the Royal Crown Revue and the Brian Setzer Orchestra (both amazing swing bands). He's a fantastic swing drummer that through several videos here, takes you on a tour of the history of the drums from 1865 to 1965. I'll post just a couple of the links.. be sure to check out all of the videos that are posted there on Youtube. It is all part of about 15 separate videos or so. I really enjoyed watching all of them today and thought I'd share.

Excellent, Justin! I'm going to watch them all. Thanks for sharing these. It's funny too that when I was taught to play in the early 60's I was taught to use the hi-hats to keep time for myself. When I play, that steady chick, chick, chick keeps me in the pocket. I never thought much about how that all got started and now I know the history behind it. Very cool stuff.

I do the same thing the majority of the time! I get it from the time I spent in jazz band back in high school and junior. I actually find it kind of difficult to play on the ride cymbal -without- that hi hat foot going as well!

I really enjoyed watching all of these videos today. I learned so many new things- I never knew that "low boys" were the early hi hats.. and I never really thought about the implementation of the tune-able rack toms and how those came about. Lots of other things as well!

Here is Daniel Glass' band, the Royal Crown Revue:

I used to listen to these guys back in the late 90s a bit, but for what ever reason, I never really paid attention to WHO the drummer was then.. i know, strange...

Daniel Glass is an amazing drummer (lefty by the way). He was at the Chicago Drum Show a couple of years ago. He's got a couple of books out that are really good also.
