The mighty black beauty snare Last viewed: 47 minutes ago

So I'm looking to join the black beauty club but I have a few questions. Is there any true difference other than aesthetics between the tube lug and the imperial lug versions? Also, I hear the new ones have a slightly different gasket fitting, do you guys remove them? If so, does this not scratch the shell?

I'm sure this snare has been discussed a ton in the past, but any information would be great. I have only played the Brass 14x6.5 imperial lug version (which was awesome).

Also, do you think it would be worth it to try and find a vintage model in good condition? I could imagine these could get expensive, and have the possibility of technical problems, whereas I want a drum that will last a lifetime.

I know some of them have the p-86 throw-off... What do the other ones have and are they preferred? I guess this is the difference between the supraphonic and the super-sensitive?

Sorry for all of the questions, I've looked all over online and have found answers, but you guys always seem to be very accurate. I greatly appreciate any little bit of info you have :)

Thanks everyone!

I have just bought myself a 70's BB 14x6.5. I'm yet to play it out on a gig, but boy that drum was singing straight out of the box. It is immediatly fuller and richer sounding than my 2 year old Ludwig C.O.B. of the same dimensions.
