The Moment You Became a Collector... Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I'm not sure about everyone else but for me I realized a specific moment when I went beyond just a guy who plays vintage drums and became a vintage collector.

For me that moment actually occurred today when I bought a Rogers Holiday snare. Black diamond pearl, B&b lugs with not even the slightest crack. This is not my first vintage snare nor is even my first Rogers snare. But this drum is different I didn't buy this to be a player I bought it to be a show piece.

So here's my question too all of you when did you have that ah ha moment when you became a collector?

Never happened. Just WAY too many drums out there that I've not played as of yet. I would have to have several houses to hold a collection. That's one of the main reasons I don't collect. I play these things and enjoy them. Then I pass them around and get some new ones to play. I hold on to some a bit longer than others, but have never had the desire to collect and covet. Glad ... very glad ... that it's never hit me. Let me be clear, I do RESPECT those who collect because it gives schmoes like me the chance to see beautiful drums in pristine condition. That's very cool. There are a few members here who have educated me over the handful or so years that I've monitored and eventually joined in to this forum. They have taught me that a person collects, not because they are greedy money chumps, but because they honestly want to preserve a piece of important history. It took me quite a few years to understand that. I do forget from time to time ... and they are at the ready to remind me ... but I honestly did get it. I love 'em for that. O-Lugs, BBK, Luddydude, VM2K, Tilv, Mlvibes, and quite a few others have been patient (sometimes) and taught me that there is value in holding on to these as collectors. Amazing group of people. I'm privileged to learn from them.

And don't get me wrong I still play and love the other drums I have. I just set up my little 68 Slingerland jazz set for band practice.

My drum teacher teaches lessons on this kinda' cool old wooden kit with a VERY distinctive sound. He even let's his younger students bang away like Bonham on it.

One day it (finally) occurred to me that he was letting everyone play on his original Ebony Oaklawn Camco's comlete with Roger's hardware. That day I decided I wanted a Camco kit (or two) of my own.

Had the disease ever since...

- Current restoration Project: Geo Way 5 piece
- 60's Oaklawn Walnut Camco kit (12/12/14/20) matching Snare (Camco hardware and Paiste black logo 2002s)
- 70's LA Maple Camco kit (12/13/16/22) matching Oaklawn snare (Rogers hardware and Paiste Signatures/Mellow ride)
- 70's Blue Vistalite Ludwig Monster kit (6/8/12/13/14/15/16/18/24) matching snare (all Hercules hardware, all Zidljian shadow logos)

The vintage drum bug bit me back in late 80's. I bought a WMP 1967 Ludwig kit for $200.00. Loved the sound of the drums, sold them to a relative on the condition if he was ever to get rid of them, I got first crack. He was in CA going to school from Canada and he wanted a set to jam with. I never got it back. Sold my other drums when I got married, and didn't play for almost 8 years. After kids and marriage, I needed an outlet, so I bought a brand spanking new Ludwig Bonham kit. Couple of months later, I was sitting on the side of the road reading a local free paper and saw an ad that read, "old drum set , needs work, $40.00". I didn't need another kit, I just bought my dream kit, but I called and went there anyway.

Turned out it was a Slingerland Radio King Ensemble 6-N approx. early 50's. The wrap was toast, faded from green to yellow on one side of all drums. The shells and hardware still sit in my garage waiting to be rewrapped. Every once in a while, I walk past my snare rack, where the bare RK snare shell sits and tap it. I love the sound of the wood, solid maple is just beautiful.

Now I have more than I need, but I'm always looking. Right now, my sights are focusing on a very nice Ludwig Standard..

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I come at from the same angle as Carl Palmer If I can't play it, I don't want it! all my drums have been played either studio or live, I have some very clean drums, but I don't want a mantle piece to just look at!But to each his own!!

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I'm still in denial that I'm a "collector", but 5 kits and 13 snares later...Eye Ball

I play every one of them, though, and anything that I own that I DON'T play, I sell. I'm like a carpenter with 10 hammers...true, I don't need more than a couple, but each one works good with a specific job, so I have them!

Some good and interesting stories here.

First of all, I am 27 years old, and have a feeling I am one of the youngest on here. I realized I was a collector, when I started working at my music store, bought 3 Sabian cymbals and said to myself 'awesome, this is all I will ever have to buy'. Not the day after getting them, did I start looking at other gear!

I started in the vintage world 3-4 years ago, when I was graduating from college, and wanted to buy a really nice kit for myself as a gift. I was getting in a Mapex Saturn kit for myself, when this lady came in and asked about getting values for her recently deceased father's Ludwig Kit. I offered to drive out to see them, and when I pulled out a per-serial WMP kit that was barely faded, along with Zildjians with barely a stick mark on them...I knew I had to have them, if for no other reason to save them from going to some 'kid' who would ruin, wreck, or just not appreciate them.

I now own 6 kits (3 vintage), something around 40 cymbals and 12 snare drums. I'm running out of room, not loaded with $$, but man, these things are cool.

1961 Ludwig Super Classic 22,13,16,18, WFL BR Snare WMP
1951-52 Slingerland Radio King Krupa Outfit 24,13,16 Champagne Sparkle
1960s/70s Polaris MIJ 20,12,16 Red Sparkle
2005 Gretsch Catalina Club WMP First Run
2008 Pearl Masters MCX 20,10,12,14f,16f & 14 Diamond Glitter
1999 Yamaha Stage Custom 22,10,12,14r,16f. Marina Green

You sound just like me there man. Every time I buy something I always say that's it but the next day I'm out looking for more haha. I'm also glad to see we have some other young guys here, I'm only 23 myself.
