The next generation of vintage drummers Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Just thought I'd share a quick story... made me smile. My son (late teens), who has become quite a good drummer in his own right and plays many genres, quite well I might add, is starting to show signs of going vintage. He has always appreciated the look of my vintage gear and has always rooted for me when I score a deal on some new vintage drums, but he has never shown an interest in playing the older gear and has always stuck with his modern stuff. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed my 1971 Supra behind HIS kit, and his snares were resting on the floor... I said nothing and just smiled to myself. Next, I see my KB acrolite in the side snare position... again, I said nothing. So, tonight he asked if he could borrow my 6.5" Supra and my brass Supersensitive (he couldn't find them on his own). He said my snares sound 'sick'... I've come to learn that 'sick' means 'awesome' in kid speak Yes Sir

Anyone else seeing their young drummers going vintage? It's a proud moment for me :)

Cool story, man...that's how it starts! I've been trying to get my younger cousin into vintage drums and even though he thinks my drums are cool...he hasn't gotten into them like I would have hoped. But yes...'sick' means 'awesome' and apparently, 'stupid' also means 'awesome'. Kids these days...

My 6 year old loves to play on my 60s Ludwig kit more than my DW kit. "It sounds better"

I can relate, last year I did a gig and my son came out with his friends to see my band, my son came up to me and said "dad, they all thought you were sick" I responded to him and said, "thats weird, I felt fine, and I didn't feel sick? thats when he rolled up his eyes. LOL

Ditto here. My son is 14 and has been bitten hard by the vintage bug. He has a 1967 Supra, 1972-ish Gretsch 4165 and a 1971-ish Gretsch SSB#1 Progressive Jazz kit.

For those that remember my "Middle School Burgundy Sparkle RB" post, that was the drum set that started it all. If it wasn't for that kit, then he wouldn't be where he is today. A lot of forum members had very valid concerns about leaving that kit in a school environment, because of the obvious possibility that it would/will get trashed. My son is in high school now, so he doesn't get to regularly use/watch over that kit. He's totally jones'n, because he is now on a Pearl Forum at school. Not that it's a bad kit, because it's actually an educational workhorse. It just doesn't have that Great Gretsch Sound. I actually spent some time, at the beginning of the school year, working with the 7th grade percussion group to help setup the Gretsch kit and explain why it's important to respect all instruments, especially this particular kit. They agreed it sounded different and really cool.

Having this Gretsch kit in the school may just start a chain of new vintage drummers. I know of at least one. ;)

I challenge all vintage drummers to go forth and inspire. Ask to visit your local school district's band program. Many have a jazz band group too, so ask to sit in and take one of your kits for some hands on/ears on experience. You never know who you'll inspire.

Awesome post, Mspartacus.

I'm 27 years old. I tour nationally and play about 100-125 shows a years all on vintage gear. We end up playing a lot of college shows and also all ages venues where we run into people ages 6-60. I have had people from every age group comment about my kits and ask me where to look or where I found them. We live in a day and age where newer, shiny, crazy, complex, and mainstream are the best things in the world (not). But there are those of us out there that keep the dream of vintage alive by playing and selling/trading/whatever to stay in the game. I just hope that we don't price the future kids out of the vintage game forever. I see beat up kits on ebay asking outrageous prices and I see a lot of them from the same vendors. I just hope they don't collect all of them and then price us all out of the market.
