The Obnoxious Kit Thread Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Recently, a fellow member here reminded me of a time gone by ... when drummers were measured not by the skills they displayed upon the kit, but by the shear number of toms and googlydoodads attached.

I thought it might be fun to shed our holier than thou attitudes and admit to a very dark and somewhat embarrassing past ... yes, we fell victim to the lure of ... The Obnoxious Kit

To kick it off:

Here's three of the more ridiculous setups from my past.

The first, a Tama Imperialstar 8,10,12,13,14,15,16,18 with twin 24s.

The second, a simple Yamaha RTC 8,10,12,14,16,22 with over 30 cymbals, a set of timbales, a Stingray fiberglass tom, a custom mounted DST, and three cowbells ... to name a few.

The last conglomeration of brands thrown up on my living room floor is a Premier kit twin 22s, 12,13,14,16,18 with a set of Slingerland Cut-a-Way toms 12,13,14 above with a Simmons kit worked into the mess and Premier and Ludwig snares to round it out. Pics blurry, but that Simmons bass is in fact mounted on stands that are moved to place it above my head ... geek.

Files these under the "what the hell was I thinking" category.

Your turn..........

Ok.

I can do this. LMAO.

I did this and quickly grew out of it. Thankfully, it lasted less than a year.

From the original set up I owned for 20 years, (1979-2000)... I added a second bass drum, 8-10-12-and a 16x16 floor tom. My original bd was tired, one broken spur at the shell because some idiot moved my drums with the 13 and 14 toms mounted, reinforced by a backing plate to keep it from breaking out. I sold off the extra pieces, and kept the second BD for this.... and its been like this for the past 12 years. 24-13-16-18. And the Ludwig Downbeat was not harmed. That was a Aug.31, 1960 transitional badge 4x14. blue sparkle. It was not rewrapped.

Hmmm....not sure if mine will be as obnoxious as the others, but here goes.....

Not sure if the size or grouping would consider this obnoxious, but the drums themselves might. The bass is an old 14x26 Radio King shell that has been covered in black vinyl and retrofitted with Ludwig hardware (I know, I know),then there's the 8x12 from my original 68 black panther jazzette kit, then a WFL 9x13 that was also given the black vinyl treatment, then hanging upside-down is the 14x14 floor tom from my 68 black panther jazzette kit, then there's a late 70's Pearl maple shell 16x16 floor tom finished in a black cortex, and in the back is the supra from said 68 black panther jazzette. Stands were late 70's Sonor (if I remember correctly, with a Tama Titan snare stand and the Ludwig 1123 hi-hat stand from the 68 jazzette kit, a Ludwig Hercules double tom stand with Tama multiclamps to fly a cymbal arm off to one side, and the pedal would have been my first trusty Ghost.) Cymbals would be all A. Zildjian from the late 60's/early 70's, except for one Paiste/Ludwig standard 18" way to the far left.

Picture is circa 1984.

Mine pales in comparison and I could not find any photos of it in action back in the 70's or early 80's but it was a Pearl W/F 24-13-14-16-18 with maple concert toms 6-8-10-12. Those were good times; back when I apparently thought I was getting paid by the note.

RogerSling, that is a fortune in Paiste stock, not to mention Aquarian cymbal springs. That would be the kit to have when you played one of those bars that should have had chicken wire in between the "patrons" and the stage but unfortunately did not. Nice fortress. How is your back?

On a slightly more serious note, I liked the Simmons kick pad mounted up high. That might not be so stylish now, but even Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa understood this is the entertainment business. It is important to be entertaining and we sometimes forget that.

Realy long sticks of course, but it didn't matter as they sounded like cardboard boxes since they were sitting on the table! Eye Ball

With all due respect to my friend Billnvick, I would have to say my particular W/F drums may have been extremely heavy but at least they didn't sound very good. The bearing edges were such that they had to be tuned nearly to the point of choking just to get the wrinkles out of the heads. The one exception was the 16 which did tune pretty well and sounded quite good. The 13 and 14 were mediocre at best and the 18 was horrible.

I sold the W/F to a guy who was looking for that exact kit as he had lost one in a house fire. Otherwise I would have taken a shot at re-shaping the edges and seeing what they could be. That would have been enjoyable. I would imagine that Pearl's quality control was kind of hit and miss in the later 70's as I have heard knowledgeable people such as Bill attest to their fondness for them while others have had similar experiences as me.

You say obnoxious, I say half-ways there!!Eye Ball

My current issue is that I am pretty persnickety about stuff matching. I would love to add some toms to get that octabon feel going, but I don't believe they make that brand of drums anymore. Soooo, if anyone has anything that may work, shoot me a PM! The toms on the kit now are 8" and 10". Or is it 10" and 12"? Not sure.

I also have that pesky octabon project I have been wanting to complete for the longest time still on the back burner...........Cool1
