For the Roger's People...
This is not a bragging post about what I have, but a posting of what
I've come into as of late, & thought to share with any Roger's players/collectors brotherin, so as to learn about the "unknown"...
I was lucky enough 2 have known a great drummer,
(also a local neighbour)..
He passed a cpl yrs back, but we started sharing stories over the fence while cutting our lawn & sharing a cpl of "cold ones"...(he was about 80)
I did find out that he was The "Head Master" of the Canadian Military drum core for the last 30yrs...(the soldier with the tall hat & huge batton that led All the (her majesty's) parades..etc.etc,he travelled the world basically.
When we spoke about drums, man, he'd lite up..lol
He told me that the Only snare drum that was worth its salt..
was a Rogers Dynasonic,...(he didn't know about my collection, only that I played)..!
So, one day I asked if he could show me how to tune drums the right way.. Aka (by ear)...
So he obliged, if I provided the Moose-head (great beer)..
So I chilled a 6pk and had him over...
When I opened the garage door, my 3 Rogers kits were all set up on different platforms and ready 2play,with my snares all lined up on a rack.
As he walked in, he said (you let me talk n talk didn't ya..! Lol).
He Immed, went for my CoB dyna..asked if he could pick it up..?
(A true gentlemen & fellow player)..
We set it up on my workbench & removed the skins,bridge,etc..
He made me regrease all my rods..lol
Then he started to "Teach" me exactly how to tune,...bottom then top...
Then bridge, then then fine adjustments..
He used a tuning key to tap the skin about 1.5" in from each of the rods..!
Then he completely inspected All my old Zildjian cymbals..man, he had an ear on him...he could tell the different from a 40s50s Cym to a 60s/70s Cym...he never looked at the stamp...
He just hit the edge with his finger while it was on my cymbal tree at ear level..the 40/50s would resonate about 80sec ..while the later ones would only do about 50/60secs...?
While we drank that day (both of us sitting on drum thrones)
He asked me if I read..? I answered yes,
He Immed went thru my music & asked me to play...
Then he showed me that a drummer needs to read 5bars ahead...!
Well, I could do 2bars Max..lol.....I thought to myself...he's 80....I'm 40...!
Man, I have a lot to learn..lol
When the day was over, he asked if I was willing to sell my dyna..?
I mentioned that if I was, I would offer to him 1st...
I put the dyna back in its case & put it in his hands & told him to take it home to play for the week...!
He mentioned that he has a dyna himself...and declined..(to prideful)
He then told me how he special ordered his dyna from Songbird music store back in 1961... & picked it up in 1962...
This drum has been All over the world, many times..!
He has since passed from cancer..(2yrs back)
Last week his widow came over & asked if I could look thru his drum supplies & offer any advice as to playability & worth, help sell, etc.
The next day I went over & went thru everything...
I tried to explain what everything was & its @ value..!
When I came across this drum, I stopped, & before I picked it up..
I found myself asking her if it was OK, if I could picked this drum up..?
Just as her husband had done a cpl yrs back..!
SHe then told me the story of how long he had to wait, b4 getting this drum from A music store in Toronto...(almost 4/6mths)..!
But once he got it...he wrked on it everyday before he left on a military trip to Amsterdam...(1963/4).
I explained what a "collector" wood dyna's were worth, in a 14x5 & 14x6.5
But, I've never seen a 15" X 8" ....?
Going Thru everything else was easy...
A few days later, she came over, put the snare in my hands & asked me if ($) amount was a fair price for "Me" to pay...?
I agreed,!
she said "Good"..! "Cause my husband mentioned to me a cpl yrs back that "I" have good taste in music equipment" ...lol
So, here it is..
@ a 1962 15"x 8" Wood Dyna in its 100% original form...
The top skin has been replaced..! That it..!
