Thoughts on square badge Gretsch oddball kit Last viewed: 31 minutes ago

Found this kit that seems overpriced at $2700, and was wondering what y'all thought. It's all the dark brown natural finish, I'm thinking maybe '80-81 ish?.

Seller says they got it custom made in the 70's but badges don't jive.

18" bass

6, 8, 10" toms x 8 depth with offset lugs

14x12" floor tom with factory added snare setup (huh?!)

14 x16" floor tom

6.5 x14 wood snare

I don't know the later Gretsch that well, but based on that single picture I would suspect that this is a collection of shells that were stripped and stained and varnished by a DIYer. Stain looks blotchy like many home jobs do. The big snare is just a marching snare added on because the 14x14 toms are too hard to find and expensive. I would be particularly suspicious of the BD, since that is the big-ticket part of this set. I certainly wouldn't make any decisions based on this one picture.

Waaay overpriced. An interesting oddball, that's for sure. Does the 18" bass drum have a square badge? What's with the extra set of legs on the bass drum? Probably to keep it from rolling over with the added toms on that afterthought tom mount…and the floor tom snare?

Cool kit for the right person, but not at that price. The stain job is questionable, but some of those era Gretsch stains weren't up to snuff.

Yes, "oddball" is a good description.

The mounts on the tom toms don't appear to be Gretsch. They look too wide and have the tension/wing nuts on the front of the mount instead of the sides. The mount on the bass drum doesn't look Gretsch either. The extra bass drum spurs look almost like Premier spurs. I also agree, the 12x14 floor tom with snares is possibly a marching snare with legs. The strainer looks aftermarket and should have been the Lightning style with the arm in the center. Do you have more pictures?

That would be a very pretty set for about a quarter of the asking price.

Stripped, sanded, and stained drum shells, no matter how well done, still look like stripped, sanded, and stained shells. A nice paint finish will look less like a home made amateur job.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
