Thoughts on the sound of Vistalite snares Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Curious to know what others think about the sound quality of Vistalite snares. I've had a black 5x14 laying around for a long time, and as part of my "Snare drum Du Jour" program (where I'm trying to play every snare I own) decided to drag it to band practice this week. I had pretty low expectations; I owned a green 5x14 previously (probably shouldn't have sold it back then... But I did) and never really cared for it's sound. I tend to favor a little higher-pitched, cracking snare but I've been trying to broaden my sonic pallet with some deeper, fatter tones as well. Anyway, with brand new heads (a coated CS on the top and an Ambassador snare bottom) and the original old Ludwig wires on it, I gotta say it took me by surprise. It was fat and warm and LOUD. It also had enough crack to make take notice. Just the sound made me want to play big-dumb Rock and Roll fills on it whenever I could. Makes me wonder what a 6.5x14 Vista would sound like. One last thing; despite his known penchant for playing a Vista set, didn't Bonham actually play a Supra snare, or am I wrong about that? Oh, and sorry, no pics- I left her at the space for another round this week...

Maybe I should spend more time with my clear 5.5 Vistalite, but it's in the bottom half of my 12 snares in terms of preference. That's not to say it's a dog, but I have others that I like more. I use it with my Phantom kit for appearance sake, but I'll probably use a 5.5 COB TDR with it in a few weeks for an important gig where I won't be mic'ed and need to get over.

My top snares (can't rank them, these are all killer):

Ludwig 5.5 Supraphonic

Ludwig 5.5 Super Sensitive

Slingerland 5.5 COB TDR

Slingerland 5.5 Walnut TDR

Slingerland 6.5 Blakrome TDR

Yamaha 5.5 Oak Custom

Well, like I said, I didn't think I'd be all that impressed. And I still favor other snares (like my Monroe Black Beauty and Cleveland wood Powertones) for overall sound, but there's a place for the Vistalite. I was gonna get rid of it; now I'm keeping it.

My guitarist hated my 5 x 14 blue Vistalite snare, I love it. My snare of choice now is my 5 1/2 x 14 Tempus, Taye nickel or the good ol Supra for gigs. At home, I switch it up monthly. Anything from Black Beauty to custom stave or my newer Geo. Way

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I notice that you list your Ludwig and Slingerland snare drums as 5.5". Unless I'm mistaken, all these, including the Slingerland Walnut TDR, were all 5" depth drums. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I trust everyone who says my snares are 5". I never measured, I just know that the ones I listed are my favorites.
