Mainly, I'd still want that warm sound...so the 6 ply will still sound good?
Yes!! Very underated.......
Does anyone feel that early 70s would be better than late 70s era? I'm partly influenced by Bonham by wanting the large bass drum for this next kit, but 24" is plenty...26" too much.
Once you play a 26 there is no turning back there is nothing else like them including a 24.. try it you will like it.. I promise these are 6 ply's

Hey Mike, sweet kit man! And, with the exception of the bass mounted crash, my set-up is identical to yours. We could sit behind each others kits and feel right at home.

Your drums are absolutly a thing of beauty! I would trade every thing I have for that.

well John we need to do that sometime it would be fun....
and Jc thank you for the kind comments i was a bit apprehensive about buying these drums but after playing them I am so glad i did this kit just sound awesome and is a blast to play.. my point is 6 ply's are heavy but then when you play them they have that rock solid feel they are loud or mellow just depending on the player and they can be beautiful as well....these are 1988 but are just as much my favorites as any kit I have ever owned....
I am looking for a 70s b/o badge kit just like yours Mike t. Think I will ever find one? Wouldnt have to be mwp could be blue oyster pearl, I really like that wrap.
This kit I have is a buddy Rich Special Order kit and it came with the 26 inch bass drum double spurs and the canister throne..... i think you can find one you will just have to look alot and don't settle for less than what you really want. I too love sky blue pearl...
I don't think the shells were bad, and while they aren't as warm and thumpy as the mid 60's Luds I'm personally crazy about, they're rounder (everything is more round than a mid-60's Ludwig).
The reason they're less coveted, I think is due to #1: People just like 60's everything better, the catalogs are more fun, the wraps are all bright and cheery, and there's a million pictures of hippies playing 60's kits. Boomer nostalgia dictates the prices. #2: People hate the riveted seams and the Modular hardware and kind of avoid the whole era.
But mid-70's-on Ludwig kits, when gotten properly cheaply off CL or some such are probably the best bang-for-buck in drumming, hands down. I had and sold an early non power tom Rocker I bought for $225 that came with probably $100 worth of Pearl stands. That would be a lifetime kit for an awful lot of drummers, honestly.
^^^ Not all 6-ply drums had rivets in the seems.
With that said, add me to the list of loving my 6 plies.. in fact, a friend of mine likes mine so much that he put together a 6 ply kit from ebay with a 32" kick to go with his other 32". Yep, double 32's, he also went with a rare 10 x 7, 12 x 8 and 14 & 16 floors, all double headed..
I have 3 6-ply kits and a 3 ply kit.
I would almost give my left one for a 6 ply 14x 16 floor tom man I am jonsing for one did ludwig ever make them? Rogers did...
