TO cut holes or to NOT cut holes??? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I just picked up a 1964 Slingerland bass drum with extra holes. It looks like the kit had originally a double mount. Someone added a rail mount but put it in the wrong spot. It should be closer to the rear of the drum not the front.

I'm gong to use these as a players kit so originality isn't critical although I don't want to hurt the value if I can help it.

I'm also going to use an aftermarket Gibralter rail system that will give me more functionality while using the same rail holes.

I have a few options:

1) I can leave the rail holes where they are even though they are more forward than I want.

2) I can drill new holes for the new rail where there are supposed to be originally.

Also, I think I'm going to plug up the original double mount holes. Is that wise or should I just leave them the way they are because they were there originally.

Here are the holes I'm talking about and where the rail should be. See how the PO drilled the rail holes too far forward?

What do you guys think I should do?

Whats two more holes....I have a slingerland 70s kit that I completely went through. And I mean inside and out. The bass drum had a pearl double tom mount plowed through it. I sealed all the holes and refinished the shell. Rewrapped in green sparkle and put a rogers mount on it. The damage was already done so I figured why not. However I would never do this to a completely original drum. In fact I wouldn't do this normally at all. But I wanted a specific look.

I think you should do whatever the hell you need to do to make the drums perfect for you! It's a player kit already, extra holes and all. What's another couple of holes going to do that hasn't already been done? If moving the tom mount makes the kit more playable for you, go for it. They're -your- drums!

Unless it's a really nice kit that has never had any extra holes drilled into the shells, adding, or taking away stuff to make a kit more playable is fine. Collectable drums is a different story, but players with extra holes? Go for it without guilt.
