Tom arm to fit '71 Ludwig rack tom Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hello! This will be the first post for me here, I'm afraid I need your knowledge! I am thrilled to say I've just purchased a couple of toms, 71 3ply Ludwig maple ones in sizes 13x9 and 18x16. They sound great, my only wonder is if there is a modern rod that will fit into the hole of the rack tom mount. Any ideas? I did a search on this forum for the answer and came up empty handed. Thanks!

I think both DW and Tama ...maybe Gibralter...They all offer a multi-clamp with an L-arm/ball and socket thing. They usually offer three sizes of L-arms options. You want the smallest diameter they offer.

Let me check around a bit.

3/8" (9.5mm) diameter L rod is what you should look for. There's several options available out there.

Yup -- you want the 9.5mm L-arm. The most common L-arm sold these days is a 10.5mm, so make sure you specify when you go to the shop. Tama L-arms are typically 10.5mm, and DWs are even bigger (I believe they're 12mm). But 9.5s are still being made. I recently ordered a bunch for some Ludwigs I'm working on.

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

Ludwig still makes a single tom holder 9.5 mil, might be pricey though, gibraltar makes tom holders,to put in BD mounts or a stand, and single holders that mount of and existing cymbal stands and balls with arms at 10.,5 9.5 and they are interchangeable if you happen to find a holder used with 10.5 arms
