Tom on snare stand Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I am working on a kit that has a 16x22 bass, 8x10 tom, 11x13 tom and 16x16 floor tom. I am going to finish the shells with a solid color lacquer and have an oppertunity to fill any unwanted holes. I think its weird to have a 8x10 and 11x13 tom mounted next to each other on the base. I am thinking about filling the holes( in top of bass and side of tom) and making the base look virgin and using a snare drum stand to set the 13" tom on and not using the 8" tom. Anything wrong with this idea? If I do this would you advise me to cut the tom down to 9" deep instead of 11"?

Thank you,

Jeff C

My opinion, (if it matters) is cool on the 'revirginated' kick drum. Have done that myself with a Ludwig Rocker II kit that the wrap was toast on, (cut a plug from a spare MIJ kick shell and it turned out great) then re-wrapped it. Don't understand why, if you're re-wrapping, or refinishing a kick drum anyway, why wouldn't you fill the holes... Virgin kick drums are all the rage. If it's a modern style kit, and you're thinking in terms of resale, I'd definitely go that route, and, (as I did as well) consider mounting toms on posts with a clamp, and possibly Rims style suspension mounts from a sturdy cymbal stand, rather that a snare stand. If the drums are vintage, then go vintage, but if they are custom, or more modern, I'm thinking, why not go the more contemporary route? That's my :2Cents:

Covers well, you will have some evidence of filling the holes is what I'm thinking.

I would surely not wrap them.... $300 for materials in hopes of a $300 resale price doesn't figure for me.

If I could get 300 I would be very happy. What do you think about cutting down the 13", making it 9" deep instead of 11" ?

And, ditch the 10" tom?

This is just a kit tp play around with finishes, I will want it out of here ASAP to make room for " vintage drums"

I dont want to invest money in any new stands for the tom, I have a nice Yamaha concert ( taller) style snare stand. Will that do?

Thank you!
