Too Many Drums? Last viewed: 9 minutes ago

Loading...

I had a semi famous drummer out for lunch with a few of my drummer friends and my wife one afternoon. The topic turned to cymbals, we were tired of talking about drums, and my wife decided to make a point. So she asked him, "how many cymbals is enough?" She was hoping to put a limit on my collection. It backfired because he quickly responded, "you never can have enough cymbals!"

I'm not sure if I agree. But after seeing this guys collections of guitars I don't feel too bad.

So how many is enough? If you just hoard them aren't you really taking them out of circulaton so they can't be played?

I know we've discussed this here before but it still baffles me.

That is the nature of collecting. So "enough" is in the eye of the beholder..err collector. I do question that from time to time. I saw one of the Lake Superior snare drums in a collection the other day and thought it would be nice if it was played. On the other hand it's nice that it is being preserved.

I at one time was up to over 35 drum kits 700 cymbals. I just got tired of having to dig and dig and dig to find a particular drum I was wanting to play or use, I have massively downsized, much happier now. If you aren't playing them or using them then whats the point ?

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

..."much happier now" describes me going from 7 kits to 4 kits. When I'm down to 3, it will be bliss.

I'm down to 16 snares from 30+, and finally down to my last hundred cymbals. I'm still downsizing my collection, as I put more items on the chopping block. The purging feels just as good as the binging did. Well, *almost*

...and I found myself past that tipping point, personally. Other people's tipping points will vary. If you find yourself unhappy because of dealing with your allotment, then you have too much.

It completely depends on the "drummer's" role and the music type.

A drummer can cover the ground of both a drummer and a percussionist by himself but he would have to have the drums to make the appropriate sounds.

Some wise dude here once said "you can't play a drum you don't have".

I really like 3 up 1 down with something like 8, 12, and 15 mounted toms with 18 inch floor tom to get a wide spacing of tom tones that will still fit in a 6 x 6 foor space with room to flail (I have 80 inch reach).

Add a conga you hit with a stick and the usual extra bits like cowbell and shakers.

That is my recipe to get a lot out of a small space.

I've been contemplating a second snare near the floor tom...........maybe one of those scottish pipe band snares.

None of the youtube videos can capture the monster snap and impact of how those crazy snares sound right in front of you and most videos of them sound like practice pads but I feel you might be able to use the effects patches they used for the "hammer of gods" snare sounds of the 1980s and apply the recording technique to one of those snares and get something really cool.

I have too many. And not enough time to play. This year, I have only gotten together with friends twice. Last year was only slightly better. I have worked a murderous schedule this year that did not allow me time for anything.

As to the drums, I do collect. I will play anything I have, and do not own anything I wont play. I have six sets I have no intention of letting go. There are two project sets that I do not intend to hang onto, but have not had the time to finish. There are 39 snare drums, the majority of which are Rogers.

I don't think I am a hoarder, but then that could be the sound of denial talking.

I'm waiting for Bermuda's response here. I think when it gets to having to acquire warehouse space, THEN you may have an answer... :)
