Too many snares? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Loading...

Who has too many snares here? I have 12 and feel a bit guilty, since I'm a part time drummer (have a regular day job). I keep thinking I should downsize the collection, but they're all so great...vintage plus modern stuff....ludwigs and yamahas...and one old radio king....metals and woods...

Comfort me during this time of guilt. LOL. Let me know this is okay.

12 snares is a realistic and manageable number, and should more than cover the sounds you might need. You don't need to reduce unless you're running out of room.

I have 69 snares, but admit to using the same 7 or 8 for 99% of my gigs and sessions. The extras are duplicates, different finishes, or otherwise rare or collectable.

You never have too many snares. I just picked up #39 this morning and will probably be getting #40 tonight. I too use a small number as my "gigging" snares. I play the rest at Jam sessions rotating the order that I take them along and use during my turn to play. Toys for big guys!

12...really 12 & you feel guilty? I went up in my loft the other day & found more than that I'd forgot I bought...I was like, what in the hell is this? LOL!

12 is a good number!...don't feel guilty...BUT, if you do feel guilty you can ship 11 of them to me! You don't have to thank me, I'm just that kinda guy!

I think we need to stage a protest in front of your house for being a snare glutton. LoLoLoLo

I remember when I got my 10th snare. I thought to myself, "Oh my gosh! I'm in double-digit land! I have a problem, for sure..." Little did I know that there were more snares to be had and enjoyed. Oh, and yes, I've come to grips with the idea that I have a gear acquiring problem (but it's not consuming my life, so it's no big deal).

If you collect, that's one thing, and I can understand that. I don't consider it "hoarding" as some people might (I tell those people that they need to start giving grief to stamp hoarders and coin hoarders). I'm a player, first and foremost, and all of the snares I do own each have a different enough sound for me to justify keeping them around. It also happens that some of the snares I have and use are "collectible" as well, but I see them as tools that I'm not going to abuse, and they were meant to be played.

So...TWELVE snares is nothing to worry about, if you're going to play the comparison game (which you should never do). If it's right for YOU, keep 'em, and even buy more if it makes sense to you. If having so many snares makes you feel "guilty" (of WHAT...awesomeness?), and you can't shake the negative feeling, do what you gotta do.

Think of yourself as Jesus with 12 disciples. He never felt guilty about them but loved them all because they were all different yet the same like your snares. He knew how to tune them all to get the best out of them!

Judas, watch out for the Judas snare that will let you down...there is always one that could use some maintenance.

Thanks for all of the replies. Good points made. I'm a player for sure, and not a collector type. I can justify each one for what it offers! On that note, I don't feel guilty anymore! Thanks for comforting me, haha :)

.... But I agree in that different snares can serve different music situations, and that's a good thing.

Does this mean I have to count?.... Again?

You cannot have too many good snare drums. Only too many bad ones.
