Top Hat and Cane Ludwig Toms Last viewed: 1 hour ago

From Ludwig-dude

Actually those were made by WFL, not Leedy. That was the WWII era Victorious series of drums you are thinking of and they are quite rare and valuable nowadays....

Answering all and the above.

I'll see if I can find the wooden drum. I think it came out of a pipe organ, which means it wasn't from a set. Had a broken head and it's a strange size, he couldn't find a plastic head that fit, so the guy replaced it and I got the old drum. I never got around to trying to trying to tuck a new skin on the old hoop. I'll add it to the hunt.

As for the THC Ludwig toms, I guess that's enough people, so I'll "go fetch". :) And snap some photos. One friend said, clean them up, and I said, oh no, I want them original. Trust me, they are untouched and in need of TLC.

Reminds me of the set of Wobble Drums that I saw in a tiny town in South-Eastern Iowa in 1967. No way I could have fit them into the car, no way to get them back to Wisconsin, and at that time no way I could afford them either. But they sure were pretty in the window?

I'm really enjoying reading the forum. I've been playing for over 50 years, and reading about all the sets and history sure brings back some memories. I don't have room for the three sets I have now, more are out of the question. But like the kid in the candy store, I can look? Cool1 Cool1

OK, it's done and fun. The door opened, I crawled over things (anyone need a dehumidifier or water bed?) Carefully climbed to the top of the storage heap, and found all three drums. I was kind of worried that with moving and then the flood, I may have lost the WFL Tom. (which is a snare...)

This one has some broken parts and missing tension rods. Now that I look I see where the mounting once was. Skin heads, some clear spots on one.

When you get to the gallery, last shot of the floor tom is what I was using the drum for. Parades, as a bass drum. I have a marching snare (ugly yellow-orange sparkle) and we'd go play in neighborhood 4th of July parties.

No holes, but when you go through the photos, try to explain the one tension rod that's so long, it can't go in any further? Mounting for music stand, cow bell, what the heck? Also calfskin, era heads.

Are you guys good or what. I say it's a tom and describe it as Leedy and someone without seeing the darn thing knows it's WFL! Really Good! Cool1 I can see where the snare strainer went through the hoop and the hardware was mounted on the side. Too bad, someone removed the badge. No second hoop, what you see, is what I have. "Mother of Pearl" is separating in one spot, tucked under the wood hoop holder.

I thought the tuning system was interesting enough to show a better view. The tension rods are in the center of the drum. Turning them pushes on both heads at the same time, with the curved piece of wood. The heads are mounted with the wooden pieces which are screwed into the shell, holding the outer hoop.

How do you know when your "old drum" that's be laying around in an attic for 30 years is valuable...??

When one of the top collectors of Black Beauty's asks for photos and one of the owners of the biggest and very well known Vintage Drum Shops joins a forum and gives you his email regarding a drum you own

Can't say I wish I wasn't in his shoes......

Best of luck, Klinger. You have the drummer's equivalent of the Holy Grail.

I am very grateful for the people here who are willing to share and spread information about vintage drums. I've added a link on my website. I hope to hang around and learn some more.

I'd like to learn more. My reason for coming here was to look up my first Ludwig set from 1965. (I've found help on the forum to date them, which is better than my memory :) ) Now that I have, it's so beat that I suspect they are about worth what I paid for them new 45 years ago.

As far as musical instruments go, that's better than anything else I've ever bought new, and right behind one guitar that I got used and held for 40 years. Lets not forget the at least four sets I bought and played and are floating around practice rooms, junk or gone. Breaking even, is way ahead of most musical "devices" I've had in the last 50 years!

Thanks for the help. This may be worse than drugs. What if I get hooked and have to buy more and more drums? LoLoLoLo
