Trick for preserving vintage sticks Last viewed: 23 hours ago

Hello,

I thought I would pass along a trick that I got from Chris Bennett, who is the owner and operator of Bopworks drumsticks. Very cool concept, he takes vintage stick specifications and makes new stick based on them. If you're not familiar, check them out:

Anyway, he mentioned that the way he preserves the wood tips and the logos on vintage sticks is to use several coats of clear nail polish.

I imagine that would help new/modern sticks too. Anyone else ever hear of this? I bought a bottle of clear nail polish and I am going to try it out. The funny part is the way that all the women in the Walgreen's makeup aisle give you strange looks when you are browsing the nail polish selections!

We did that back in the '60s... my mentors probably learned it from guys back in the '40s! Chipping/splitting tips were the reason Regal Tip came out with nylon tipped sticks in the first place!

How to preserve vintage sticks? Easy. Don't play with them! You're welcome.

I have a drummer friend who swears by the nail polish method for his drum sticks. Personally, I don't like it...I like the feel of the wooden tips on my cymbals. With the nail polish on there, it kind of feels and sounds like I'm playing with gumballs on the end of my sticks. It's a good choice if you want to play the middle ground between wood and nylon tips.
