Trying to date Rogers snare / determine worth Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hi everyone! My name's Joanna and I work at the Woodwind & Brasswind; been here for a few years now. My husband's a drummer so I'm a bit familiar with drums and brands.

Nevertheless, we took in a snare trade that has caught my eye. It came in with, of all things, a late 80s/early 90s jet black English Yamaha kit.

It's a Rogers snare. It is maple, left natural, with a glaze? lacquer? (but not the bright lacquer you see on brass instruments). Flat grey paint on the inside. It has the slanted silver Rogers badge used from '61-'68/69. It has the following tag on the inside:

No. 26***

HOLIDAY Model

Made in U.S.A. By

R O G E R S

Established in 1849 Cleveland, Ohio

Given the serial number, the inside tag, and the badge, and with the help of a website detailing Rogers serial #s and general Rogers history that I now cannot find, I place this snare within 1962.

Lugs are not B&B nor are they beavertail, from what I can tell (I'm still @ work and sans camera, no way to upload a pic of the lugs). They are somewhat . . . diamond shaped, perhaps? Definitely a rectangle with a defined point halfway - I guess more of the 'Asian' style, as I've seen described elsewhere . . .

Hoops - I've no idea. Triple flanged as best as I can tell. Still has the muffler. A few hairline cracks where the air vent is.

Short of photos, what can you tell me about this snare, and what would you imagine it's worth? If it's worth anything, perhaps I'll buy and try to sell it to a Rogers aficionado. :p

It sounds like someone has taken the B/B lugs off and replaced them with Pearl's early thin walled lugs. They used them for years, and now Kaman makes and sells that lug as well. I believe you'll find, upon removal of one of the lugs, that there may have been some wallowing out of the holes to fit them. Or maybe not. Occasionally we find a lug that just fits the old Rogers B/B lug hole pattern. Let's see it when you get in!

HOLIDAY tag, not crossed out with powertone handwritten in, means that was a bread and butter lugged drum. From the serial number, that would be mid to late 1962.

I think FIBES for the lugs.

This drum should have tall hoops and square top tension rods. No blip at the bottom of the square, just square down to the washer seat.

Good work on your dating, it was accurate.

Natural finish lacquer suggests this drum was stripped at some point in its history, and a close inspection of the ROGERS script badge nails and the condition of the vent grommet should confirm this.

Throw off should be a roundish Clock Face with ROGERS on a black background. These were used into late 1964/into 1965.

Value is whatever someone will pay for it. But ..... 150 aprox. At this point in its life, the sum of the parts is worth more than the value of it whole.

Thank you so much everyone! jonnistix, those are EXACTLY the lugs on the snare - what lugs are those?

I'll shelve the notion of selling it for hundreds to a collector, then CryBaby

Still an awesome piece of history - and now I know what to tell the customers!

They are just generic Pearl lugs, on every low end POS from the Taiwan Pearl stencils and low to mid level kit they made for like 20 some odd years. Many brands of drums have those and Kaman still sells them as replacements and new for cheap skate drum builders.
