Here is a pic of the suspect drum-I measured the hole and it is almost 6.5 inches wide
Yep. Tone killer. The rush of air from a center strike on the batter head runs straight out of that hole positioned there in the center.
You probably can get a good dry thud if you mic it like that, but on it's own it won't have much tone at all.
