I recently bought a BDP Ludwig 13/16/20 kit, which I assume is from the mid-'60s. It has top and bottom mufflers on the toms, and 4 kick spurs. Is that indicative of anything? I'll post pics as soon as it's set up.
Thanks in advance.

it was optional on the spurs and the mufflers. i think its a great idea. i especially like the double spurs when they are the disappearing type.

Thanks for the reply Mike. Does it date them in anyway? They have white interiors, but no sign of a date anywhere. Would these be Classics or Super Classics? I've got a sweet mid-'60s Supra to round out the kit, and authentic hardware on the way.
Thanks again.

if the floor tom badge is centered, they would be probably 63-mid 65. if upper placement, mid 65 -68 or so. do they have baseball bat mufflers or round knob mufflers. if bats, are the felts white or red? serial numbers would also date them for you.

Thanks again, Mike. The s# on the floor tom is 158343 which would seem to put them in mid-'65. But the badge is nearer the top, and they have round muffler knobs. Guess I'll stick with mid-'60s.
Stephen
yep. that serial number would be a mid 65 drum and about the time that the badge got moved up. interesting about the mufflers though. they were using baseball bat mufflers(white felt) at that time and up through 68. ludwig used 3/4" round muffler knobs in the early 60's before the baseball bat mufflers. they then used 1" round muffler knobs in the late 60's after the naseball bats. are yours 3/4 or 1?
mike
The muffler knobs are 3/4". The mufflers themselves are round black felt. It gets more confusing - the sizes of the drums are 13/16/20 which doesn't seem to correspond to any of the kits offered at that time. Could this have been a custom kit?
Any ideas?
Thanks again Mike.

there have been quite a few factory 20/13/16 kits pop up over the years. the original owner may well have ordered this set exactly like you have it. with it having the 3/4 mufflers, that leans towards original even more. if they had been 1", i would think retrofit done after the fact. ludwig probably decided to use up some old stock they had on mufflers. or they may have thought the round knobs made better sense with the dual mufflers. even though they were well into bat mufflers at that time, the round knobs still appeared on lots of marchers in 65,so they must have still had some stock of those.

Thanks for much for all the information. I really appreciate it.
Take care.
