Firstly, Hello! I've been a vintage drum player throughout my life and career, and since the mid 1990's I've played Ludwig exclusively. Recently I've added a red sparkle kit with mismatched shells. A couple of these are clearly re-wraps and appear to be non-Ludwig shells retrofitted with Ludwig hardware and blue olive badges. The 12x8 tom is a 3-ply shell with maple rings and clear interior. It resembles a Ludwig in every way except for two empty screw holes on either side of the mounting bracket, suggesting the shell may actually be a Slingerland (stamped 1976), but I don't know if Slingerland and Ludwig casings are interchangeable. The 14x14 floor tom, however, is something different altogether. The lug casings on the bottom are staggered from the top rather than lined up evenly with them. The leg brackets are the same shape and size as Ludwig's but without a brand name, and use wing screws instead of Ludwig's standard gripping brackets. The shell itself is thicker ply with no rings and flat grey interior (surface grain looks like mahogany). It is also slightly larger in circumference than normal, which makes the heads fit too tightly (I can't even get the batter head off) and it doesn't tune well. I've experienced this with some cheap Chinese kits before. Can anyone help me identify these two drums? Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Welcome! That shell, from your description, fits the Star MIJ made Majestic specifications from the late 60s to early 70s.It will sound pretty decent, but the hardware is worth more than the shell.

I just found pictures of a Majestic kit on this forum and the floor tom is a perfect match. Also, whoever owned this kit before removed the original mounting bar from the 20x14 bass drum and installed a different one top center. That is also a Majestic. Thanks, Jonnistix!
