Unusual `60s Slingerland snare Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I had been on the lookout for a `60s badged 6.5" Sound King snare.

Had a `70s version with the black and silver badge, but really wanted a `60s black and brass badged one, and they don't seem to be nearly as common.

Just bought this because it was what I was looking for, with a twist.

It is a cob 3 line shell, with cob hoops, and `60s badge # 39493. The badge and vent hole are unusually high up on the shell, but I have seen that before.

What is unusual is that it has a Rapid strainer, and not a Zoomatic, or Radio King, or Super Sound King strainer.

The only 3 line shells with Rapid strainers and butts I have seen were the Leedy badged drums.

Probably just a matter of Slingerland assembling a drum with parts that were on hand during a busy period of manufacturing.

Nothing on this drum looks non original or messed with.

One other odd thing is that the knurled tension knob on the strainer is a later `70s version. I am thinking the knob or the whole throwoff was replaced, but that the drum did originally come with a Rapid strainer.

Looks in nice condition... I have not seen that strainer combo either... (have seen that badge position on the 6.5 shell though)..

Cheers

To my ears, these Slingerland snares sound close to perfection.

If I had to choose one snare drum to play, it would be a Slingerland `60s cob.

I don't know how common those are - but fact is, I owned one of those for about 25 years. I had a P-85 on it for years. But, when I went to restore and sell, I wanted to put the right strainer on it. When I went to install a Zoom on it, I discovered that it must not have had a Zoommy on it - as it only had 2 screw holes for the strainer. I installed the right one - a RAPID and sold it.

YOUR SNARE might even be the exact one I used to have. ??? I sold mine to GC in Flint, MI back in 2009 or so. The lugs had alot of scratching on the outside.

I did not document the serial number.

I bought it from a friend in high school (late 80s) for $50. I gigged and recorded the heck out of it for 25 years.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Just found a pic on my computer of the badge - it was Serial number 117021.

The grommet looks weird, but I'm just looking on my phone. The TDR uses the same hole spacing as the rapid, but the TDR wasn't around in the '60s. I have seen 5x Festivals that were sent out with the 3 line brass shell, so I'm guessing this was a Festival sent out with the brass shell. Very nice!
