Value of A Couple Of Slingy Snares Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

So, I'm looking around to see what vintage Slingerland chrome snares I can find. Not being well versed on the subject, thought I'd ask the question.

In my (limited) experience with vintage stuff, I had always heard that chrome over wood snares were generally worth more. So, I've come across a couple of '70's snares and wondered what they are worth in really good condition.

The other question is, I've seen a number of (looks like) 70's era Slingy chrome snares, no ribs or etching on side (Krupa 3 line) and also wondered what these are and are generally worth. If they are nothing more than an entry level snare, then I'll pass....this is what I think they are.

Last, I'm not an Acrolite guy, but do like some of the earlier ones. Are they worth more or do they fall into the same Acrolite category as many of the ones from the 70's. I've seen later ones (black) w/black and white badges, and have paid them no mind.

Thanks very much.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.Excited

Slingerland is an odd animal as in they offered lower or entry level snares in 8-lug cofigs more often than 6-lug like their competitors.

The 70s smooth shell chrome snares you are seeing might be the Festival model, offered in chrome over brass from '63 to '71 and then described as "chrome shell" whatever that means in '73, and then as chrome over steel in the '77- '78 catalog.

I believe the COB version of the Festival from '63 to '71 to be the same shell as the non-beaded Sound King shell as introduced in '63 .... just my opinion there, different strainer (Rapid as opposed to Zoomatic), but that's all the diff. between the two.

That seems to be the only year the Sound King was offered in the non-beaded form by the catalogs anyway.

I don't see many Festivals for sale out there.... maybe they were not popular due to being priced within $10 of the Krupa Sound King with the new Zoomatic strainer?

I'd buy a Festival in a heartbeat, especially a COB one..... maybe $100 to $150 range, I dunno, you never see any for sale to gauge a fair price for them, so that's my guess.... I could be a sucker....??

I'm kinda confused now, just passing it along so I don't feel like I'm flying solo here........:confused:

The problem for me is I just don't know when looking what it is. Everything I see has the rapid strainer that came on the aluminum snare. It seems like these snares are the aluminum snare with chrome shell being the only difference.

Sort of confused...though I like the Rogers power tone(?) snare but there aren't manytheAt are inexpensive.

Are you seeing them in pics, or in person...... take a magnet with you to check the shell and look closely at the badges.... it should make the evaluation easy. There is a badge article in the Drum Guide that will straighten out most of the ID problems.......

Feel free to PM me, and we can get in touch by phone.... lots easier than this, 'ya know?..........:)

Thanks! No, not in person, just EBay stuff. Badges a black and silver, Niles, but no curl on the S. Figure somewhere in the 70's.

I'm just playin'. Not investing, just cleanup and sell if I can.

Not sure what I want as next "good" snare. Had a later BR in white, didn't like it.

Anyway, that's where I am for now.

Thanks for the help!

Found a few, looks like 85 or 86000 serial number....

I checked the badge section on here and the black and silver Niles runs from 70's to. Early 80's. How do I makes sure it is early 70's?

Look at the serial number guide.... same page where you can select to look at the badges.

Okay, I did and it indicated between 1970 and 75, thanks for the tip. I just picked up a chrome shell Slingy snare...the one with serial number 86000. It also comes with an original (he says) Slingy snare stand. Never linked them, so I'll just sell it. Picked up the snare for $36. Lots of surface rust and stud, bit should be able to clean up pretty nicely. Think it also needs a snare side head.

But, I checked the catalogs referenced on this site and, you're right, I think its a Festival snare...8-lug. Shows up in the '709, 73 and '76 catalog. Though looking at the serial number chart, I would estimate this to be somewhere around'late '73 to '74.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=290568873231&si=9pnZkdDlKigq5f6xqdAc1dopBCY%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AL%3AOC%3AUS%3A1123

If it's early enough and cleans up well, might keep if I like.

Thanks for helping out....probably look for more soon.

Have a nice Memorial Day!

Cool pick up. There have been lots of Slingy festival snares popping up on ebay recently! They seem to sell cheaper than the Krupa Sounds Kings and I have been on the fence about picking one up because I wasnt sure how good they sounded. However, after hearing Kevin's description of how similar those two drums are I may just pick a festival up if I can get one for a reasonable price! Post some pics when you can and good luck with the drum!

Thanks! I wasn't sure if it was worth the bother, but after hearing what Kevin(s) :) had to say, I decided to try to pick this one up. By its description, it seems to be all original and comes with the original stand. Who knows, for the price I thought it was worth it. I've picked up other chrome snares that looked like this one, and after some careful cleaning and polishing, they actually looked quite good. If its a rust bucket, oh well, then I only paid $36 and it wasn't terrible gamble.

I'll sell off the stand for a couple of bucks to offset a bit.

I do, at some point, look to pick up a Sound King....same as a Krupa? Not sure, seems to be a different snare in some catalogs that I looked at here on the site.

Appreciate the help, I'm a newbe here....very cool!Cool Dude
