Remember having those same Rogers sticks back in the 60's, and remember really liking them.
Back at Frank's Drum Shop, there was of course nothing made that didn't come through that place. Probably went through a 1/2 doz pair of those, and sure wish I had some today.
Even remember in the early 70's trying to clone some on the lathe in shop class.
I sold a pair of Ludwig Buddy Rich signature sticks, still in the bag for $125.00 to a guy for his collection. Still have one pair left!
Lyle, this is a great story and you have a pair of BR`s used sticks handled by the legend himself. Not even TommyP can claim to owning such a set and that is saying something as he IS one of the very best BR historians/collectors on the planet. But to have a pair of BR`s sticks with battle scar marks on them-priceless...And TommyP your stick collection is amazing and your wonderful BR. knowledge is appreciated as always.Great stuff here!Wayne
Thanks Wayne, memorable for sure. I also had a pair of sticks that Rufus Jones gave me during a Basie gig. It was '65 and I was the only kid there sitting right next to the bandstand in a skating rink in Rochester, NY. I had never heard a big band live before and I was so ecstatic, I remember going to a pay phone and calling my Dad. "Dad, you gotta come down here, this is incredible, etc. etc." My Dad who was a drummer and had grown up in the Big Band era said he couldn't come but he had heard it before...."so enjoy yourself". During the break I got Basie's autograph (still have) and Rufus gave me a pair of his sticks. When he gave me the sticks he asked if I was a drummer and when I told him I was, he said; "you gotta read the charts man, learn the charts". I nodded my head and had no idea what he was talking about. :) Here is the weird thing about the sticks...they had purple nylon tips. I don't remember the brand but I think they may have been Regal Tips. I wrote to the company early this year to ask about this but got no response. Sadly, over the years I lost them...but I sure do remember the night.
Lyle, you were one very lucky kid to have experienced these concerts and to have them still fresh in your memory after all these years-incredible!When you told this story and the BR story, it made me feel like i was there experiencing what you had experienced. You certainly have a way of telling these great and true stories and the part about calling your Dad from a pay phone during the Basie gig-wonderful...I hope someday these Rufus Jones sticks with the purple nylon tips will turn up for you when you least expect it.Great stories!
Wayne
