This past weekend my high school had a reunion of all the band members who were there under the same director. Basically 1971 to 95 . They recently demolished the old high school and have built a new one. I was unable to attend the reunion. I was speaking to a couple of members via facebook and here is part of the conversation.

Timothy Gordon What happened to all that stuff?

Timothy Gordon That's insane. I am sure there were lots of things that could have been salvaged. I hope they did not destroy any old instruments. Drums. Stuff upstairs.

Terry Cornett Tim, you are so right. I might have been one of the last musicians to see the stash in the attic. I needed a wind machine for the symphony and Bob mentioned a Lee Band Parent had built one for the band it was stored in the attic. I was able to get custodial staff to let me in and retrieve it. It took several football players and wrestling team members to lower it off the roof.

Terry Cornett I recall seeing lots of old drums, horns and uniforms...all in disrepair; but salvageable.

Timothy Gordon Ohhh my goodness. I am a member of a vintage drum forum and we restore old drums and drum sets. I am sure there was a treasure trove of stuff. Parts and things of vintage drums are so valuable. I remember even when I was a senior mr Baccus and I were looking up there and there were many nice old drums and instruments. What I would not have given to have been able to have rescued all the old drum equipment. It kills me to think about it. Especially since most of it was blue and silver sparkle.

So, I know there were many drums, bass drums, snare and tenor drums, glockenspiel, tubular bells, etc. I saw a lot of this stuff personally when I was in the band in 1975. The band director and I were in the attic above the band room. I remember a lot of the stuff was from the 50's and early 60's. Many many drums and all types of instruments. Bulldozed. It sickens me to think about it. All thos cob rims, lugs, drums, cymbals. Even the marching cymbals are good for trap set. I bet there were. K's and , I hate to think about it. If I had known I would have driven the 14 hours to have salvaged all that stuff. Hurting. Just there for the taking. I would have thought someone would have had enough sense to have rescued that stuff. If I had only known. This was a major high school in Huntsville Alabama. Can you imagine 40 or 50 years worth of drum corps instruments. Plus all the other instruments and things. What a waste.

Tim - I'll bet it happens more often than we'd like to think. The only time I ever went 'dumpster diving' was 15 years ago in Brooklyn. I was driving home one time and saw a bunch of kids messing around a line of dumpsters next to an old high school. I slowed down to see what they were so excited about and saw that they were retrieving instruments from one of the dumpsters. I pulled over and joined them in the trash hunt! I pulled two -complete- Ludwig parade snares out of the heap. I didn't stay long enough to dig any deeper because the kids were all over the thing it was like a feeding frenzy and I wanted to get out of their way.

Imagine how many vintage drums and equipment simply get dumped into a trash bin each year by schools across the country. Makes me a little sick to think about it.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

oh, to find that dumpster I'd dive right in, most likely they were thrown in the dumpster and right back out ! most every one knows Ludwig drums are cool even if they don't know there collect ability of them sorry to here that, proves a point our drums just keep growing in value there are only so many left if we can live long enough to justify the means....

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
