Video Comparing Coated Vs. Clear Heads Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I wanted to try clear heads on my 70's Ludwigs, and I looked for some youtube videos to give me a good idea of what they would sound like. I couldn't find anything that really helped, so I made my own after buying a set of heads and trying it the old fashioned way.

The video compares Evans G2 Coated and Clear on the toms with Attack 1 ply medium reso heads. Everything else is the same in both videos. I shot it with a Zoom Q3HD that I just got and LOVE. It's incredible how accurate the sound is. It's just what the drums really sound like. Even better, I got the camera B stock for $120 (retail is $300).

I still think clear heads sound better on the 70's Ludwig's. On the older, coated. Your video proved that, in my ears anyway.

Yeah, I liked the clear heads better on these drums too. It's really just a personal preference though. The drums are 22/13/16 with a 5x14 snare.

I prefer the coated heads.. it really is preference, I would never play clear on anything.

My Purewood Renown Gretsch came stock with G2 clear batter and G1 clear reso. The bass has an Emad and is like a sub woofer.....kinda. They sound just awesome tuned high and when I tune them low I put studio rings on them or sometimes a little moongel here hand there. The 16 floor just rumbles. I use Tala Wands most of the time and these drums sound wicked. I love the heads. I've not tried other heads but I'm thinking any head would sound good - just different.

I wonder how my 3 ply mahog luddy's w/ re-rings would sound with ambs clears? as aposed to the (currently) coated emps
