I gotcha, that picture reminds me of a scene in The Gene Krupa Story, the female vocalist thought his kick was too loud and threw a mink coat over it. Sal Mineo, playing Gene Krupa, was not too pleased.singer

The bass drum mic in the pic is not a modern bass drum mic, like a 52A, so there's that to consider...maybe the punch is just a bit more mid-range in origin, which would go with single-ply coated heads tuned relatively high.
