I know this may make some of you cringe but ......... the story behind these are kind of interesting. In 1977 Jim Corder of Corder drums gifted me these 14"x22" and 8"x12" Chanute Camco shells. He knew I had silver sparkle drums because I had bought my first nice set, "Ludwig Hollywood's" from him in 1971 when he had a small music store. The only hardware on them were Gretsch bass drum spur mounts, "which fit nicely", and the straight double rubber ended Gretsch spurs. Unfortunately not knowing any better I put large Ludwig lugs on the reso side of the Bass drum and small Ludwig lugs,"which fit the holes" on the batter side of the tom and played these drums for years as a second set in small clubs or places where I did not want to leave my A set. The last 20 years the bass and tom sat in cases in my attic. In the last 2 years I decided to fix them up to play. I bought a Keller hoop and aftermarket lugs and tension rods for the Bass and lugs for the tom which fit all the existing holes. and they sound great. I was looking for a matching floor tom but one day I see this vintage 16"x16" stop sign badge 1973 floor tom in matching wrap on CL. Had all the lugs and leg mounts. Got it for $50 and restored it. So I have this little Vintage Jasper shell Frankenkit. All wraps are super nice. I did make some new spurs from aluminum rods.

They sound great. The tom can still be restored to original as no extra holes. The bass, wellll... It is still nice just the extra hole for the lugs and the Gretsch is really nice. I use this kit on jazz gigs sometimes.

First of all... Chanute... I live 30 miles south of there. I'm not aware of any "remnants" of the factory, but I think they only made the drums there for about a year.

Anyway, I understand the idea of a "Frankenkit." My first kit (probably 1970 or 1971) was a 3 pc WMP (yellowed nicely) Gretsch kit probably out of the 50s. 14x20, 9x13, and 6.5x14 matching snare (same lugs as the tom). It had a rail mount (spade type) for the tom, hoop mount cymbal arm, and hoop-mount BD spurs.

Before I continue, let me say now that if I knew then what I know now, I would have NEVER modified this kit in any way! But... I was young and stupid then...

I didn't like the tom mount. It wasn't cool. I didn't like the clip-on spurs or cymbal mount -- again, they weren't cool. Didn't like the SD -- to me then it HAD to be chrome; matching wasn't cool. What was cool was anything Ludwig. So, I installed a Ludwig Standard single tom mount, Ludwig Classic curved spurs, bought a 67 or 68 Supraphonic SD and used the 6.5x14 as an extra tom, as well as a 10x14 WMP Ludwig (club date style lugs) "former" parade drum as a tom (both on snare stands), and ordered a new (really white) Gretsch 16x16 floor tom. Also got all new stands, and traded the original (to the set) K Ziljian cymbals for new Avedis Ziljians. Looked "OK" from a distance, but... Anyway, I played with that set then for only a few months (through my garage band period) when I then sold it to my little brother (and probably took him, too) and bought a new Ludwig Rock Duo.

Thanks for the thread. I've always suspected that I wasn't the only one on here that did this kind of stuff "back then."

The Chanute Camco's were made from 71-73. Before moving to CA.

I could still buy some real Camco lugs, spur mount's and spurs, but at this point don't want to spend the money. If I ever get rid of them ,which I doub't, I will just sell them as shells like I got them. I don't think they look to bad, no one has ever noticed since I have the round lugs on top and front and the other's on the bottom. Look sort of matching even though we know better.

That's about right on the time-frame. Didn't "Kustom" own them for that time-period? That's why there was a factory in Chanute, the way I understand it. I grew up near Topeka, and didn't move to this part of the state until 1989. And that was long after Camco (and Kustom) were gone...
