This past weekend I ran into an old friend who was once my bands management company and I brought up this topic. I asked what happened to all the gigs? He said it was a combination of things that has "killed" live music. 1st - DJ's and dance music, he said, and this is no surprise, they started really cutting into his business in the early 80's, 2nd he says, was a change in musical tastes, as dance music became the Pop music of the day and Rock became classic rock, demand shifted, which encouraged the DJ business, 3rd, he say's was the end of the baby boom, a decrease in the percent of young people going out to party on weekends, 4th raising the drinking age to 21, cut into the bar/party crowd, 5th was crack downs on drinking driving discouraged people from going out as much, 6th was (at least here in NY) ban on smoking in bars, cut into the bar business, and finally rap music, and an entire generation of kids who did not grow up with live music and don't respect live performance. - I agree with all of these.

All 6 points are valid and very true.I certainly wouldn`t want to be starting out in this business in this day and age.

This may sound terribly hypocritical but when I found out a guy my daughter was dating was a "musician" and this was to be his career, I secretly hoped the relationship would end quickly and painlessly.
