Vintage Gretsch? Modern Gretsch? Rogers? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

I have been trying to make some decisions about my kits. Basically I have three vintage Ludwig kits - 1966, 1968, and 1971 - and two C&C kits which sound very much like vintage Ludwig drums. With this, I have started to desire some different sonic choices. Surprise, surprise!

So, I have been looking at vintage and modern Gretsch drums. I'm gravitating more toward a vintage set, but living in Singapore makes it tough to play these drums before purchasing. So, I was wondering if you could give me some things to look for with these kits? What kind of sonic differences could I expect between a modern and vintage Gretsch kit?

Vintage Gretsch vs vintage Ludwig? (By the way, I'll be looking for a kit with a 22" kick drum, if that matters.) Heck, I'd also consider a vintage Rogers kit, but finding a finish I like with a 22" bass is about impossible.

Any insights?

Thanks!

If yr flexible with a 22 or 20 bass drum...

I'm thinking a mid to late 60s Rogers kit should be the cat's meow...!

There is not much you can't do with a mid 60's Rogers kit. I have a mid 60's and my 68 kit and both sound IMHO not too far from my modern Sonor Prolite. The difference is the Sonor Prolite kit will set you back about $6k.
