Vintage ludwig black oyster 20x14 worth Last viewed: 26 minutes ago

Hello gentlemen and fellow vintage drum connaisseurs ..

I have a question regarding the worth of what looks to be an early 60's Ludwig BOP 20x14 bass drum for sale on my local classified site KIJIJI, it's the Canadian equivalent of Craig's List (we have craig's as well ;) )

but it's only available here in Canada..Anyway, back to my question..

Is this drum really worth $800 Canadian dollars ?. I contacted this guy and i can tell that he knows absolutely nothing about drums because his initial attempt at placing the ad was priced at $40.00 !! INSANE !!

Then some big mouth contacted him and said that he had one of the most sought after and pretty rare , highly collectible, 20x14, 60's BOP bass drum and that asking 40's dollars was crazy.. I understand that someone would want to inform the man that he could get a lot more for the drum seeing as how he knows absolutely nothing about drums and priced it at a price that i could only describe as a travesty.. Nice guy for doing so.. However, now because of his new found info, he jacked up the price to $800..

I think it's a little unreasonable for an orphan, but i think it's worth would be about around that vicinity..Only problem is that most won't pay that much for just the bass drum, and then wait to see if it's other orphaned brothers (tom and floor) would be found on ebay and reunited..

With that being said, here's the link so you guys can view this little baby.. It's even got the rare telescopic spurs which for the life of me, can't find on any Ludwig catalog on the vintage drum guide website..You usually see them on 60's club dates..

This is just curiosity and i already decided not to get the drum.. If he was selling the bass drum and tom or floor, then that would be a different story all together.. I would just simply ask my wife to get me my 50th birthday present 7 years early ! ;))

The seller Thxs him...and gets on the internet and does a cpl hrs of research and wammo....$800.

In the future...here's what you do ...

If the number is there...call..

If not, sent a message that says....

If you get him on the phone...

Make a friend....then ask him to cancel the ad...

Once I see the ad is removed,,,,il get in my car and come over...

Otherwise send$$ thru paypal as a payment...

Do what is needed to get him to hold it till you get there...

A cpl yrs back a 100% mint pioneer 1963 snare came up on Kijiji...

When the seller told him ...that it was on my way to get it...

I see what you mean.. I did just exactly that.. I saw the ad at 3 am the night before, sent him 2 emails that i was interested and that i would pass by the following afternoon.. I then called him after i got no reply and his voice mail box was full !! Just my luck..Then i saw that the ad

was changed because of that spoiler guy.. That's life i guess .. Lol !..

There was another ad about 2 wks ago where someone was selling a mint, vintage all original Blue oyster pearl Ludwig, with all original factory Ludwig / Paiste cymbals, cowbell, throne, the whole sha-bang..$300 Canadian dollars !. My wife had to calm me down after seeing the ad..

Then i looked closely at the ad, and it said the dreaded four letter word... SOLD !

It's ok.. I currently have really nice players kit that i restored with a custom drum wrap here in Montreal called Lumigraf Drum Wraps ..Looks insane and completely unique.. I'm going to post pics up here once i get all the missing parts from the Ludwig factory..

Thanks for the response ;)

cheers !

Those spurs were in the Ludwig catalog for years (50s-70's) so nothing unusual about them although most of the 60's drums were sold with the fold outs. In this instance they would be a bit of a negative as the reason that drum is sought after, and more expensive than other drums of similar vintage and specs, is due to the "Ringo effect" and Ringo had the fold out spurs. Probably not a deal breaker for someone looking for such a drum but I'd sure try to use it to get the price reduced a bit.

Incidentally this finish was Ludwig's top seller for 2-3 years thanks to the "Beatle Boom" that rocked the musical instrument industry during the mid 60's. Ludwig could barely keep up with the demand for drums in this wrap. These are not by any means "rare" drums...but the high demand for vintage drums in this wrap keeps the price up anyhow. $800 probably isn't insane for that but more than I'd want to pay.

I understand that they were in Ludwig catalogues , i just didn't see any BOP 20x14 with telescopic spurs on any catalogue, other than on club dates, which this particular bass drum is clearly not..So that's what i meant by rare, in that they're rare to find them on bass drum that isn't club dates..I do know for fact though, that they existed because this isn't the first example i've seen of it.. But those sightings are few and far between.. Thanks for your insight and response ;)

Many drummers ordered up drums just the way they wanted them. A fair number seem to have chosen the disappearing spurs, often two sets of them. They were standard equipment on the Club Dates and Standards but the cataloged Classic sets all had the fold outs shown in the catalog...but anyone that wasn't a fan of those could easily specify the other type on sets being ordered.

You are right though, the majority went with the fold outs so you don't see these nearly as often. To my mind they actually work a lot better than the fold out model, although neither are much compared to modern spur designs.

I think the person who tipped off the seller was a good soul.

Jacked up to $800 and you're still interested says everything. I think it's worth it, though. I'd guess the majority of obp Ludwig kits available are orphaned together.

Had a CL listing in my-ville & someone in Timbuktu felt the need to call, out of spite since he wasn't close enough to nab it, or as a good samaritan, & let the seller know item was select & underpriced.

My view is that seller should have a clue, not be given one. Just because you can't get there in time shouldn't mean ruining it for anyone that lives in the realm.

That doesn't mean I'd steal candy from a baby. However, this is a grownup game & sellers should do the homework or rue selling for a song,
