vintage Ludwig set for sale, worth it? Last viewed: 22 minutes ago

Hey all,

Bit of advice on a kit for sale.

I have a vintage MIJ stencil kit already, but I've always kind of wanted a vintage 'name brand' kit...and there's an old Ludwig set for sale in my city.

I don't have any reference point for pricing these - is this a decent deal?

(I assume there is a tom holder somewhere off-camera...)

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Its just too hard to tell from essentially one photo, since they both show the same thing. They appear to be 60's Ludwigs,in black diamond pearl wrap. The snare may be a jazz festival. If the tom mount is original and the bass dum is unaltered, the set is missing a tom because it may be a Hollywood model. If its a Classic model,it should have a rail consolete tom mount.Too many red flags without clearer photos taken showing more detail.

So for me..pass.Too much money and to little detail.

I'm local, and saw this ad as well. Don't think these are actually 'vintage', but rather, newer Ludwig kit - retro, re-issue sort of deal. Vintage, (60s) Ludwigs aren't maple, but newer versions apparently are. These kits aren't cheap either, but if you want vintage, then I don't think this is the actual article, though I may be wrong. Might be worth a contact to double check, but if you're patient, you might find an actual 60s Ludwig kit a bit cheaper, though you gotta be diligent, and quick to get the good deals.

The chip in that wrap looks wrong for a vintage kit.

Looks like the NC badge to me. I'd ask for better pix. He does say they are "Classic Maple", so that means Monroe era drums, not vintage. Those are relatively newer drums.

Oh really, hey? Not actual original 60's stuff?

I didn't know the old ones weren't maple.

I'll probably pass, then. Especially if it's (maybe) missing a tom too.

Bit high-price. Probably why they haven't moved for a while, haha...

I thought the badge looked a little big,and maybe I should have read the copy.Thats what I get for posting on 2 hours sleep...sorry If they are Monroe drums then the tom mount may be correct.

Not saying it's not a good kit. Ludwig's a good company, and maple shells are usually a good bet, and not cheap. These kits new start around two grand, so it's not a bad deal if they're in good shape, and it's not necessarily missing any toms, though my preference would be the old style consolette mount for a single - just not an actual 'vintage' kit.

Oh, geez, ok - I see what you guys mean.

This thing is a re-issue, as in Ludwig is making them right now.

Haha, I didn't connect the dots before, but I checked out their website, and that all makes sense...
