Vintage marching snares... ANY value??? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

I recently purchased a gretsch WMP 15 x 12 marching snare for $40.00.

I plan on cutting in down in height and making it a set snare. I'm thinking of

making the new height at 6 1/2". Anyone out have any thoughts of my

chosen height?? The original WMP wrap came off in one piece. Any

imput would be welcome! Thanks.

I think that's a great idea and I really like the size. I dig 15" snare drums myself.

To those who actually play them in a kit: can you get that superdeep tone from those 14x10 etc.?

Most marching snare drums I've heard are more in the "tipiditik" than in the "thumphhh" dept. ;-)

Take a look at some old catalogs to see what height sizes were offered for 15" drums. 6 1/2" is good, but you should try to base your height around the existing holes in the shell. What type of lugs are on the shell, single center mounted snare or the tom tom style lugs? Does the shell have a mufler? Where' the badge? All of these factors will help with the cut-down size.

Here's my 15x12 cut-down:
