Vintage Music You've Recently "Discovered" Last viewed: 15 minutes ago

Being a born again vinyl junkie I enjoy my spare time rummaging through used record albums at whenever I can and discovering for the first time old bands and singers that passed me by way back when.

My latest favorite "I can't believe I was not into this band until now" discovery was the band called The Poppy Family. We know the husband Terry Jacks had a solo hit later in the mid 70s with Seasons in the Sun, but before that back in the psychedelic '67's he and his awesome singer/wife Susan Jacks formed the Poppy Family and released I think only 2 albums.

Their music is so trippy cool and Susan's vocals are really incredible. I swear that current singer Neko Case must have studied Susan's vocals to a T. They sound almost identical. Anyway, enough rambling. Anyone else recently discovery new "old" music for the first time? I'd like to read your thoughts. Thanks...

In the last couple years I have been listening more to artists like Bobby Darin, Booker T. & The MG's, Wilson Pickett, The Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band, John Hiatt, and a few others that were not on my radar early in life.

I've been enjoying The Faces/Small Faces' music lately. A young Rod Stewart's vocals, Ronnie Wood's guitar sound and style, and Kenny Jones laying down a sweet groove with a classic drum sound. Just really diggin' that right now.

I don't play keyboard but I have one and I'm determined to learn "Green Onions"

There are so many! I'm constantly digging to find that "rare groove" classic that escaped me. Today I played Alvin Robinson's "Down Home Girl" in a rehearsal. This week I was checking out the discography of Earl Palmer and came across some Lalo Schifrin stuff I had never heard. I listened to Heavy Axe by David Axelrod and though I knew it a bit, I listened to it in a different way. Great stuff! This thread could easily get me ranting so I will leave it at that for now,,,

Nucleus was a recent discovery for me. Can't believe I never heard of them before. Also, Ahmad Jamal is one of those "how could this one go under my radar for so long" experiences.

I agree. It took me just until recently to really appreciate the chemistry. Kenny's playing is great. Rod's vocals so passionate. The whole Faces sound was loose, spontaneous and fresh.
