As I read the post, my first thought was to ask you to check for three little unused holes on each tom. In the era those were built, the tone control was opposite the mount and there were script badges on each side of the mount. This made for universal mounting. They began to do that in 1968 or so, but you see odd-ball layouts along the way where someone in the shop wasn't playing with a full deck that day. The photos of the Red onyx kit that is attached is a set that had the mount drilled into the wrong panel. I've seen this show up from time to time. The tone control is just out of sight in the panel to the right of the panel with the script.
Oldschool's kit, on the other hand, looks like a true lefty set-up.
