Anyone know if I could use a P-83 strainer on a 4" shell or would it require something shorter?

i havent measure one. but, i would guess a piccolo strainer of some sort would work better. the p83 would probably have clearance problems on the bottom i would think. ludwig didnt use the p83 on the 4 inch snares that it made if i remember correctly.

No, you would need to use the P80 piccolo strainer, or one of the available knockoffs.
