Vistalite-original or RCI route Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Good morning:

WRT to my previous post about my cracked Vistalite 14x22 bass drum-debating whether I should be patient and find a 1:1 Ludwig replacement for it or do I strip the hardware off of it and go buy a new RCI shell? I had a really nice conversation with the RCI guys yesterday and am impressed with them. Kind of torn as to what to do-any thoughts?

Very much a matter of personal taste. I prefer the original Vistalites ('70s vintage) and have never had a cracking issue. I always felt that RCI was infringing on the Ludwig stuff - especially when they use the Ludwig badges. If you are not proud enough to label your own product, why would I want to buy it?

My kit:
Ludwig Vistalite Big Beat set consisting of:
14” X 22” bass, 16” X 16” floor tom, 8” X 12” ride tom, 9” X 13” ride tom, 5” X 14” snare
Ludwig 201 Speed King bass drum pedal
Ludwig 1124 Spur-lok hit-hat with Ludwig Standard Paiste 14” cymbals (760 & 770 gr) with ching-ring
Two Ludwig Standard S-270 cymbals stands
18” Zildjian crash cymbal (1550 gr) and 20” Zildjian ride cymbal (2130 gr) with CAMCO sizzler
Gibraltar motorcycle seat-style drum throne with backrest

That is the way I am leaning as I want to maintain the authenticity of what I have if in fact I can come up with another shell

You can always order one direct from Ludwig.. Brand new shell that's still manufactured,

and more solid than the originals, will have it's badge, and is a perfect match.

Although, i'm not sure how long your order would take, seeing as how only the drilling of holes would be done, and badge installed..It usually takes a special order almost 3 months to get shipped to my location here in Canada (Montreal), so yours will probably take less time..

I guess I'm of the opposite thought here: if you just can't find a good replacement Ludwig Vistalite, why not use an RCI replacement shell? RCI manufactures excellent shells. And, I completely understand them installing B/O badges on the shells and have no issues with this. I'm sure RCI is very proud of their products!

Why not repair the crack and maintain the originality of the kit? The repaired crack will be stronger than before it cracked.
