VOX/TRIXON Set Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

I have an opportunity to purchase a VOX/TRIXON set of drums and I really don't know much about the company or the value of them.

At first glance I would say the sizes are 20", 12", 14" and a 14" snare. Tom mount and floor tom legs included but no other hardware. It is a blue finish that almost looks like a type of foil wrap, (original). There are some tears in the wrap. The snare has an original strainer, but is pretty beat up. The original front head is in tact that says Vox, but the badges (which are small) say Trixon. The set looks similar to a gold one that is for sale on this forum currently. I would say the overall condition is fair to good. The only visible damage being the tears in the finish.

Some questions:

- How do I determine the age of the kit?

- What are the shells made of?

- Is this a gigging kit, do they sound decent? I currently play a 63 Rogers that is made very well and can handle playing out a few nights a month

- What is the estimated value?

- Any recommended resources online for info on these drums?

As always, any feedback is greatly appreciated!

up until the late 60's there was a date stamped inside.but generally, before 1964---long pointed lugs, after, until 1972 blocky ribbed lugs.

shells are almost always European Beech for all drums. around 1963-4 they fiddled with different shells, so there are some birch and composite birch/masonite shells.

like any quality drum, Trixon are fine drums and as good as any out there but you can't fall into the trap , like so many do, of becoming religious about heads. each drum may need a different head to really shine.

value depends on condition but Trixon are generally undervalued drums. unlike almost every other drum company, which made a range of drums from entry level to top, Trixon only made one grade; top( and a small number of junior drums). all Trixon drums are the best they made and when in excellent shape , they are terrific playing drums.

parts are available but tend to be expensive because the supply is thinning out. the snare wires are unique to Trixon . There are only 3 kinds for 14" and 2 for 13". these are very hard to find in good condition but adaptions can be made.

i have some parts , if you end up needing them as does the link already posted for you. good luck. Trixon drums are wonderfull to own.

you can just barely make out the huge Trixon badge( 10 1/2" x 4 1/2") on that floor tom. It was usually on the Trixon Vibraphones but it was used on the 20" floor tom from the 6 tom Mambo set as well( 1 20" floor tom + 5 concert toms in a semi-circle around the floor tom). This is the origin of the Lionel Hampton attraction tom. occasionally Hamp would stand on the tom while playing.

That was a calf head and he is whacking it pretty seriously too.

Almost looks like a New England Patriots logo!

What would you pay (rough estimate) for the Trixon set I described in this post? $400? $800? $1200? I am really at a loss as what to offer her. She is a band teacher I have known for 20 years. The drums have been sitting up on a shelf for that long. She bought them at Daddy's Junky Music Store back in the 80's. I doubt she paid a ton for them. Does the year of manufacturing make a huge difference?
