hey john, you could always do what i did with my tie dyes. i used a cotton twill cloth material. i got it from...http://www.spoonflower.com and it was very affordable. i did my 5pc kit for right around 80$ with some material left over. check out the site, great people to work with. you can get wallpaper from them too and even customize the design you want to order. just a thought.
I plan to go over the wallpaper with Lacquer or shellac, so I don't anticipate any issues like that. They will be just like any other drum that is, for example, stained and lacquered. Still not sure to use for a clear coat - never done that before - but sure I will get some advice on here about that.John
the only problem i see that might happen is....once you get the wallpaper on then do a clear coat or laquer, the wetness of it may cause the wallpaper to lift from the shell while the paper is wet.... wetting down wallpaper is one way of removing it from the wall.

I used a Minwax marine clear coat urethane and wet sanded in between the coats. Many of the bands had shiny coats on them and I didn't have any issues getting the coat to stick.

You mean something as simple and inexpensive as this?
John,
The marine clear coat urethane Matt describes above which he used on his cigar band kit is the same coating he used on my rope tension snares (pic below). You'll want to use this product; it's very durable. I couldn't afford to have our company crest hand-painted on these shells, so I had the crests printed on vinyl, and then Matt mounted the vinyl sheets and clear coated them. The finish has held up very well despite the repeated friction of the ear-tensioners sliding up and down the surface. If you use vinyl wallpaper, and coat with Marine Urethane, I think you'll be successful. Keep us all informed.

mchair303 - Thanks for the testimonial. That is the kind of comment I am seeking!
Can someone verify that my link is pointing to the right product? The word MARINE does not show up in the product description, though when I search for "marine clear urethane" it shows up in the search results.
BTW - In the event of scratches on the shell, when something like this is used, how would I approach fixing those scratches? Could they be buffed out, or would it require another coat (after some sanding)? No, not planning on scratching her up ;) Just trying to be preventive and learn.
The wallpaper that I will likely be using is indeed vinyl.
Thanks,
John

wet sanding takes care of any small scratches or imperfections such as bubbles or uneven spots.
That is the same stuff I use and

EUREKA!
The aforementioned Silk (vinyl) wallpaper (Green/Pink/Antique White) arrived today - on all days - my Birthday :) This stuff is going to work GREAT! It looks amazing in person, as compared to pics. But, I thought I would take some better pics and share.
They have quite a bit of hatching - fine details - and the antique white has a Pearly effect to it - overall looking very multi-dimensional. The green and pink is very faint and subtle - depending on light.
This wallpaper resembles the Rogers' Steel Gray Ripple - but also has a Satin texture, as well as subtle green and pink highlights. Zoom in and you will be able to see the texture - this is very nice high-end wallpaper. Who could ask for anything more??!!
ON ANOTHER NOTE EQUALLY AS THRILLING: took delivery today of a 20in BD & 13in Tiger Eye Pearl (AKA Root Beer Swirl) as well as a Star BD pedal, along with both new and used heads thrown in....(How much would you pay???)......but wait! That's not all - even a Cadbury Caramel candy bar! What a fun surprise - very clever that I really got a kick out of!! I got all this from a trade deal with MutantMozart (Mattias). These Whitehalls I got in the trade are the 3ply w/ rerings - and for that I sent him some of the same drums (except newer - with the thicker shells) 24in BD & 13in tom - in the same RBS color). What are the odds we would both have the same drums - but also the exact combination of what each other were seeking (difference in size/plies)...Amazing! I am so grateful. He was a Pure Pleasure to deal with as well! A1 guy to do biz with!
So - it is quite a wonderful day!!!! It will be quite some time before I can get to this project - but eventually I will update this thread - a kit I am trying to put together for pretty much nothing.
